(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.)
I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense.
What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?
I would have to agree with all of you!!!!!
Swimming = Life
Swimming = Happiness
Swimming = Everything to me!!!!!
:D
Right on brudda'!!!

The alarm shierks to life
Your dreams slip away
Time to wake up
And start another day.
Open your eyes slowly
To see there is no light
Snuggle down deeper
Today's another fight.
The chill of the air
It stings upon your face
Is all this really worth it
For that one little race?
Roll over again
Ready to snuggle down in
But today could be the difference
Between a loss or a win.
Throw off the covers
And shutter in the dawn
It's off to the pool
With one last good yawn.

I rediscovered swimming just 4 weeks ago. I was heistant and unsure that this would be the best time i 've ever had in my life!
I swam in HS but got ear infections a lot-my parents pull me out from swim team. I was good swimmer.
Then i just did not do it again- went to college - etc.
2 months ago , and this is true , i was having dreams of being on a swim team and swimming good. One day i drove to local health club to test drive in the pool for one week.
I thought - if i swim 500m that would be good. Then everyday it become like a drug-i needed it more each day-3 weekas after i started i swim on average 3-4 miles per day and spend 2-2.5 hours in a pool. I am shcked what had happen but i really like it the pull of swimming was overwhelming i can't resist that. Now i find excuses to go to the swim.
Next week i will join local masters swim team-why? because my soul needs it.
I had great things happen in my life-but this one is the biggest for me.
Why? i don't know-life is very strange
when i swim i feel like in heaven free, unafraid, clear, my mind is in suspension, and body also. After swim i am happy like newborn child ready to start new day and sad i have to stop and wait till next day.

I must have missed this thread during the Olympics.
It's nice to read all your feelings about swimming, and it's good to see that even positive threads can be in the big-time, in terms of views.

Maybe this is the best place to post my poem about swimming.
Imagine Swimming
Streamlining in a cool fluid flow,
With only air and water to soothe the senses,
Being entirely present through this rhythmic motion,
As past tension transmutes into current reflections,
Nothing now but sweet sublimation in this aqueous moment.

Here's another one that I had deleted from a previous thread,
I thought it might be good for posterity on this thread.
Beautiful Butterfly (yes the swimming kind)
Big green caterpillar crawling through my door,
Why oh why did you crawl all the way here for,
Not just once did your crawling cross my path,
But twice in one week now you do the math,
My store is around buildings, pavement, and shiny cars,
Crawling like that is like me walking on Mars,
No plants to hide in, no grass to eat,
Crawling like that is one incredible feat,
Yet you went the distance and risked your fragile existence,
My brain needs assitance to sort out this lucid resistance,
Ah, now it makes sense as I see you break from your cocoon,
Never before have I seen such a beautiful butterfly soar to the moon.

You know, during my swim today I was thinking.
Space and time is simply a matter of perspective.
In reality, there is only one flowing moment of now,
occuring simultaneously across the entire universe.
In that singularity everything is connected through
the sub-atomic field.
Hmmmm.... Maybe that's why Michael Phelps seems
so fast.

It's Valentine's Day again and it's three years on,
There are more master's swimmers now, and alas others are gone.
This I surmise is the way of the world,
So be grateful each time that your towel gets unfurled!
