The meaning of swimming

(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.) I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense. What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?

Well I finally sat down and finished the collection of poems that I promised to comprise almost a year ago (sorry guys). I tried to post it here but it's not letting me attach it. If you want me to send you a copy shoot me an e-mail (javagurl15@yahoo.com) and I'll send it along. :)

  • Here is the link to her site: http://www.marinmorrison.org Swimmers from all over the world are writing her notes of encouragement, including Aaron Peirsol and Brendan Hansen! Her guestbook is VERY inspiring to read. Definitely makes you count your blessing when you see someone like her bravely facing her challenges with a positive "can do" attitude. PLEASE post her a note. Her guestbook takes a long time to download so don't give up!! She would love your poems about swimming. Thanks!
  • We are real authors now! Thanks for all your hard work, Kyra and Jim!

Since I am not nearly as computer savvy as some of the other patrons of this site (such as Ande Raz for example), I simply created a yahoo group titled "The Meaning of Swimming" to supply the link to the file containing an electronic copy of the poetry book Kyra put together for us. It's really a wonderful book with very nice graphics included. When you get to the site, you can either follow the instructions there to access the book or simply click on "Files" from the left-hand site menu to access a link to the book. Beware Kyra.....I had to re-format the book into a word document in order to upload it onto the site....For some reason it wouldn't upload correctly as a PDF file. So the pages of the book are actually individually inserted JPEGS into a word document now.....the result of this is that a white border now appears around each individual page of the book (where no white border appears in the original PDF file you sent me via e-mail).....It's the best I can do with my limitted computer skills....please forgive! Here's the link to the site where the book is now stored: groups.yahoo.com/.../ Enjoy Newmastersswimmer p.s. I will try to leave a copy of this link in the guestbook of young Marin Morrison too so that she might also be able to enjoy it while she is recovering. According to her website, she is supposedly recovering pretty well considering all that she has been through.

Thanx Jim!! No worries about a border....I was afraid it was something worse when I first read it. I'm glad you're going to leave a link on Marin's site too.....I was going but my computer was being dumb. I hope everybody likes it!

One other thing to mention about accessing a copy of the book: Apparently you have to join the yahoo group where the book is stored in order to access it. Just click on the big link at the top of the homepage that says "Join This Group" and follow the basic instructions given after that....I know....it's a little bit of a pain and all....but the reward of accessing a copy of the nice poetry book Kyra put together makes it definitely worth the small inconvenience of filling out a small electronic form....and after you join the group....stop by and leave a message on the messageboard from time to time....this will then provide us with yet another NSR sidekick for this discussion forum!
