Alcohol And Swimming

OK,not at the same time but how much do you drink each week/day and how does it affect your swimming/times.I have recently cut down from moderate amounts each day to only moderate amounts at the weekend and also managed to cut my 1500m swim by 1 minute!!!!!
  • Reducing alcohol consumption solely for the purposes of improving swim times is a sign of serious priority imbalance.
  • I imagine that unless the alcohol is affecting your training (e.g., missing workouts in the morning from begin hungover), the only benefit you'll get from cutting back on alcohol is from the weight you'll lose. Personally, I drink moderately--usually a beer a day, occasionally more--but haven't changed my alcohol consumption much so can't say with certainty whether it affects my swimming.

Oh where do I begin??!.... When I cut out my bottle of wine a day habit, not only did I feel so much better in the pool, but I lost 25 pounds (I also stopped eating cheese and fatty foods and learned to stop eating when I was full)! When I have a cocktail or two, I notice a difference the next day in the pool, even if I don't wake up with a hangover. So if I'm gonna party, then I have to pay the price....;)

  • Beer is another form of carbo loading as long as you don't consume so much that the alcohol affects you in a negative (severe) manner.

I've found putting a couple of good beers away the night before a meet to really help out. Well it helped at the World's anyway. :D

Don't forget carbon dioxide slows the transfer of oxygen to the blood... Thats the reason we should not drink carbonated beverages just before we swim. George Park www.swimdownhill.com
