Speedo or TYR?

I am curious to what your preferences are regarding Speedo or TYR products (or other). I myself am a Speedo girl, and always have been. However, I recently bought a discounted TYR reversible suit for practice and it lasted way longer than any Speedo ever has. I'm tempted to buy TYR again, but do I dare switch loyalties? I like Speedo styles better - I've never been big on brand names at all, except when it comes to swimming - there's just something about Speedo.

I am a Speedo girl through and through. Suit, cap, goggles, bag, hat, .... For economics though I find that Waterpro suits are one of the better choices (maybe not the best, but pretty good). Also, swimoutlet.com is a good place to shop.
  • Some of the best and long lasting suits were by Turbo. They used to do specialized team suits for HS, college, and clubs. The company disolved last year and the two major shareholders are currently in the swimwear business. Agon produces suits like Turbo used to and is advertised in the major swim publications. The other company is called Crotten and they produce under the trademark Turbo. They specialize in custom-dyed swimwear and water polo gear. I had 2 suits from Turbo that lasted longer than the name brands and just found out they are split into 2 companies. The ones I had look like the ones from Agon currently.
  • I liked whatever I could find that I could afford, then I got a grab bag suit and they sent a nike one. I loved it! it fit perfectly and lasted a long time! However, I also just recently got a speedo polyester that is holding up very nicely too, I think it's a tie between Speedo and Nike for me :)

I just got a Kiefer polymesh trainng suit. I'm using it over an old pair of jammers. It is working really well on forcing me to work harder. I got a 34 waist. Next I'm ordering either a 36 or 38 waist.
  • I love Nike for anything that isn't swimming. I've had HORRIBLE luck with Nike suits. They wore out so fast, didn't fit as well and so on. I LOVE Speedo. I could be there poster child (move over Amanda Beard). Suits, goggles, caps, bags, warm-ups, dryland stuff, sandals ... EVERYTHING!

Speedo suit, pull-buoy, paddles, cap and Nike goggles. There are a lack of places to buy swimming gear in my area and I just bought what I could find, which was mostly speedo. Though I like the Nike goggles way better than the speedo ones I had before...
  • Hi Chickadee, Are you going to be diving in (aka competing off blocks)? If so, the wide straps are really more supportive. My thin-strap suits have a bit more give when diving. That said, I definitely prefer the thin straps for practice because I get fewer 'swimsuit hickeys' from the thin straps. On distance free sets, the thick straps tend to rub my neck. If you look at the thin-strap polyester/endurance suits, make sure you try them on!! They tend to fit a lot differently than the lycra ones and some are cut really low up top. Also, look for sales! Girls suits are dang expensive, usually over $60 for a new style, but last season's styles can be had for a lot less. Good luck. :)

This is a question for the women - sorry guys. I am getting ready to purchase another suit, but I am stuck on the straps. I have always worn the wide strap suits for support, and I wonder if those thin strap suits offer the same amount of support and coverage. There are so many more choices in the thin straps, especially in the polyester suits. The ads all highlight the freedom of movement in the thin straps, but there is some movement I really dont want to experience in front of my male teammates.... I have a speedo endurance suit that is holding up extremely well after one year, in fact I am getting a little sick of it! One of the reason to get another suit...

My preference depends on the strap width ...... TYR makes a skinny strapped team suit that I like. Speedo also makes a really skinny strapped suit that I like. I figured that out by trial and error. I like both. :D

I used to wear Speedo almost exclusively. But I recently bought six suits in a grab bag in my normal size, AND NONE OF THEM FIT. I exchanged them for a size bigger. ONLY HALF FIT. All the same style and that much variation in one size??? Now I've still got some of the original size that I bought a couple of years ago, but save for meets, and they fit fine. (Not stretched from use). I compared the old ones with the new ones and they are WAY different. Either Speedo has changed their sizing charts, or their quality control is awful, or both. Perhaps that's why these were in the reduced bin? Returns because they didn't fit?? Since I almost always buy my suits mailorder, Speedo is now not an option, and I'll be trying out other brands.
