It costs me more in time than anything. I live in Forest Hills, Queens. There is a pool at the YMHA down the road. Costs $500 a year. Travel time is 10 minutes. I opted not to join because it's hard to get your laps in. It's mostly crusty old men floating in the pool. So I was going to a community college pool with limited lap hours. Ditto the YMCA. These places are always too crowded. At the moment, I'm taking a break from swimming. I might do it once a month for cardio. That's it. And I'll pay $20 to swim at the Asphalt Green when I do get the itch to swim. I feel better now that I'm away from the pool. I'm jogging and doing stationary bike for cardio. One day a week I'm still doing the weights. I just put on a pair of sneakers and run. No schedule. No overcrowded lanes. NO KIDS!!!!!! I have more free time too. Today, I drove to the track, jogged 2.5 miles, and drove back home. I was home in an hour. A swim would've cost me 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Every so often, we need to change our workouts.

I've just moved to Florida from NYC, where I was a member of the Central Queens YMHA. Their pool was nice, but the showers, sauna and locker room could have used a good cleaning.

Work lunch-time swimming: $36/month at the YMCA in Lancaster, PA along with a 1 time $80 fee. No cost for the masters swim group - we are self-coached, which can certainly be interesting, but chaotic. Closer to home swimming: I also swim at Elizabethtown College for $40/semester and at an outdoor pool in E-town for $115 for the summer.

Free where I lifeguard and $10/ season at the City of Chicago pools (1 fee, go anywhere) totals about $30/ year ... summers are free. It's the suits that add up!

paying 23.50/week. Terribly and sadly prohibitive to many.
  • 4 practices a week, driving to the pool, yearly membership = $14.22/wk But I train for free. Those that pay to swim assuming they drive the same distance as me it would be $21.30/wk. it sounds higher in dollar than in swedish kronor. Maybe that's because the dollar is so much weaker now than it was when I moved over in 2001. 10.51kr/$ then compared to 6.30kr/$ this week.
  • Divided by a weekly fee, just the coaching is $54.50 a week. This gets me in to the pool before it opens to the public and an hour and 20 min practice on weekdays and 2 hours on Sat. We take a 6 week break during the summer and do about 90 min of dryland instead. If I want to swim on my own, it's $8 per entrance.
  • Swim on your own is cheap - but no team mates or coaching.
  • $50 a month plus $40 annual application fee for our team. Swimming with a team motivates me to work harder and I consider the cost a worthwhile investment in my physical and emotional health.
