I belong to a Y with membership dues of $250.00 a year. It is a well maintained facility with a 25 meter in-door pool with sliding glass doors to the outside for summer sun bathers. One just has to be careful of the time to swim as early morning and early evening are very busy. Other times it is usuallly possible to get a lane to ones self. Another thing that is great about this Y is that the locker room is clean, clean, clean!

It cost me a $300 joing fee, and about $75.00 to $80.00 a month for the place where I swim... It's a little bit of a heft price tag, but the lanes are hardly shared, and the steam room and jacuzzi are a terrific treat. Plus, Paul O'Neil goes there! Along with very experience triathletes, committed swimmers of all ages, exercisers, and nice folks in general who really care about being healthy.

We have a familiy membership at the local Y. It is about $75 per month for all of us. It is a good place to swim. Two 25 yard pools one indoor and one outdoor (summer only). They are planning to add a 50 meter pool outdoors and covering the second 25 yard pool by next fall. Hopefully a Masters team will follow! Although it is a Y, I can't say that I have any of the same problems Shaky has. Unless I go between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm -it's a zoo then. I usually go at lunch and rarely have to share a lane or maybe split a lane with one other person.

$750 a year with a corporate discount...for a 25 meter pool in a health club. If you swim in the evening after work (7 -ish) there is rarely more than one other person per lane. Towel rental $1 for two towels. Commuting costs not figured in as it is on my way home from work (New Y ork East Side to New Jersey waterfront).

ummm... let's see... it's $45.00/mo. masters team fee plus a one off team fee which was like 20.00 or so, plus yearly masters fee... I'm fortunate that there's three or four teams around, so I could comparison shop... (just for curiosity's sake, in London, I was paying 30 quid a month for a council-run membership, which included unlimited swims and gym before I moved here- I didn't belong to a team then, though...)

I swim at a Y and pay $485 for a membership that covers both my husband and me. I also pay an additional $10 a month for coached masters swim which meets three mornings a week at 6 AM. This Y has a 50 meter pool, which is almost always too warm. It also has a very nice fitness center with Nautilus stuff, weights, treadmills, and that sort of thing. There are also spin classes, aerobics (both water and land), yoga, and tai chi. The yoga and spin classes have an additional charge.

My YMCA, which I've whined about too much on here already, costs $85 per month and had a $100 joining fee. For that, I get to share a lane with three or four other people in a 6 lane 25m pool that smells like fried chicken. I was touring the business school at the University of Pennsylvania the other day and realized the building across the street from it looked suspiciously like it housed a pool. So I dropped in there to find out what to expect to shell out to keep my body on par with my mind, and it's only $206 per year. I don't know what their pool schedule is like or how crowded it gets, but it was a 50m pool with a movable bulkhead splitting it in half. What's more, there's another pool on campus that I didn't get a chance to see, which has a different schedule. Of course, the fee should be included in that crazy tuition payment, but at least it's not as high as the YMCA.

The annual fee where I go is $35. The facility is 2 blocks from my house. There are no other costs. Nice place, too. Seems I am getting a good deal. I must be paying through the nose on my property taxes (it is a municipal facility).

$45/month + $30/year for locker. Use of weight room and cardio machines room included. Excellent 10-lane pool, 25 yds/25 meters (depends on how the lanes are set up). Additional (warmer) pool for water aerobic "floaters" and kids which keeps them out of the lap pool. My only gripes are youth swim team practices that hog 90% of lap pool lanes from 4pm-8pm, making after-work swims impossible, and 25-minute commute from my house. Closer pools are crowded and poorly maintained.
