Swimmer's shoulder

I apologize if this has been asked before; I searched and didn't find anything about shoulder pain. How do you know for sure your shoulder pain is from swimming? I've watched videos and read information about it, but I'm wondering what YOU think. Mine doesn't hurt WHEN I swim, only when I'm NOT swimming. Sometimes there's a pain that goes down my arm a little bit. I read that you can hang from a bar and that actually helped! Thanks in advance!
  • I think you ought to see a physician. Are you positive that the pain isn't from something else such as a torn labrum, torn rotator cuff, etc? If it is, you might not be doing yourself any favors by continuing to swim before it is rectified. Dan
  • No, I'm not positive, but I've been swimming almost twice as much as usual, so I thought that might be why.
  • Did it hurt or was it sore b4 you doubled up on swimming? Do you have a coach to watch what you do with your arm and stroke?

Thanks in advance! im not a doc but i know a heck of a lot about shoulder issues. it all depends on where in the shoulder your pain specifically is. very common to get long head of the bicep tendonitis - in runs right through the deltoid and feels like shoulder pain
  • I'm also not a doc, but as someone who went through shoulder repair and a year and a half of pt, make sure it's not your neck causing the pain. Researchers have found that, even in the case of a torn rotator cuff, shoulder pain often actually radiates from the neck. A simple x-ray can tell if you have a bulging disc which responds well to physical therapy and stretching.
  • It may have been getting weak before I doubled up. As of now, I'm thinking it's resolving itself. Did it hurt or was it sore b4 you doubled up on swimming? Do you have a coach to watch what you do with your arm and stroke?
  • That could very well be it! I've increased my weights and the number of days I work biceps. im not a doc but i know a heck of a lot about shoulder issues. it all depends on where in the shoulder your pain specifically is. very common to get long head of the bicep tendonitis - in runs right through the deltoid and feels like shoulder pain
  • Well, that's another little issue I was having. I woke up one morning with a little bit of neck pain and going down toward my shoulder. Right now it isn't as bad. It was hurting just sitting and doing nothing. It isn't as much now. It doesn't even hurt while I'm swimming, just resting! Thanks for your input! • my shoulder issue caused major neck pain...i was getting 8-12 shots into my neck every 1-2 weeks my shoulder issue caused serious atrophy of my trapezius muscle as well both and mri and an arthogram mri (dye injection) did NOT show my real issue.
  • I went to see a spine specialist who did an x-ray and MRI on my neck and there was nothing wrong. In fact he said my neck was pretty darned good especially for someone my age. When we moved to Maryland I had to find a new physical therapist. She specializes in the McKenzie technique. I was skeptical because it's not your traditional pt. But after even a week I could feel the pain disappear. I no longer have neck pain and almost all my shoulder and upper back pain is gone.
