This weekend: Helmut Richter from Germany new World record in 50m freestyle (LCM) age group 80 - 84 : 31,28!!
  • When you break a Michael Phelps word record, take a bow. When you break a super suit world record, take another bow. When you break a Michael Phelps super suited record, we all bow to you.
  • When you break a Michael Phelps word record, take a bow. When you break a super suit world record, take another bow. When you break a Michael Phelps super suited record, we all bow to you.Absolutely. That was stunning. There are more than a few supersuit records from '09 that still need to go down. I suspect the next Phelps record to go will be the 100 fly (maybe this week)... and I can see swimmers on the horizon who could challenge his 400 IM record. If those three go, the GOAT will be erased from LCM individual records ... kind of hard to imagine.

Phelps "deserves' the M 200 LCM FR record, and the W 200 LCM fly record is just plain stupid, 2:01 - get real!
  • swimswam.com/.../ Quote: PHELPS, 2009 MILAK, 2019 24.76 24.66 52.88 (28.12) 52.88 (28.22) 1:21.93 (29.05) 1:21.57 (28.69) 1:51.51 (29.58) 1:50.73 (29.16) Who closes out a 200 LCM fly in :57.85 anyway!??
  • I disagree that Phelps “deserves” the 200 FR record. Biederman made the most of what was available to him at the time. He happened to benefit tremendously from the full body suits (I’m basing this on his times from before they were used, during their use, and after they were banned). He beat Phelps head to head. But to your second point, yeah some of the super suit records are just silly. A statistician wrote an excellent four part series for SwimSwam in which records stood a chance to be broken. He divided them into four tiers. Very interesting read.
  • That 200 fly was amazing to watch!! How he came back on the back 1/2 of the race was a wonder to see!

Good point. Biederman certainly has the record fair and square. "deserves" was probably a poor choice of word. it's just that MP's 200 was such a great swim it seems a shame to have that "cancelled" by technology.

And I am not advocating that despite his record, Biederman is the better 200M FR swimmer than Phelps. Phelps was posting otherworldly times in that event before the tech suit era. Put them head to head in a jammer or a brief, and I would always give the edge to Phelps! (I realize some people might think that because Biederman has the record, he IS the better 200M FR than Phelps. I just think you have to look at the whole body of work, but I am not taking anything away from that world record!)
  • I dunno but she just took down the 100 back record by a half second too... Honorable mention to Duncan Scott anchoring GB's medley relay within a tenth of a second of Lezak's legendary anchor.
