Water shirts for midday workout?

Has anyone found a rash guard or swim shirt that enables them to workout at least somewhat like they would without it? Every year I keep expecting speedo or one of the manufacturers to advertise a viable fabric that clings to the skin while maintaining a decent level of breathability and uv protection. Anyway, anything out there that works well for people?
  • I appreciate the suggestions. I picked one up at the sporting good store this morning and I'll report back soon...

Second vote for the O'Neill, although I use the long sleeve. Mine don't last too long because they stretch out and become a drag suit over time, even if rinsing in fresh water before/after. Better than skin cancer though.

Body Glove rashguards are comfortable and skintight. They're great for messing around, bodysurfing, etc. Not optimal for swimming fast in a pool, but I used mine a lot for swimming La Jolla cove. I usually split my workout half and half between indoor and outdoor pools when I find myself swimming at midday. Either that or pester my wife to help grease me up with SPF 50.

O'Neill rash guard works for me -- sun in the Summer and wind in the Winter. www.swimoutlet.com/.../11828.htm Snug but comfortable. Plenty of shoulder movement. I go through one every year. Made of Lycra so the shirt stretches and thins with time.

good idea. They have some polyester ones from speedo at the sporting goods store near here. $30, not too bad but you'd have to test the fit since not lycra.
  • Don't forget your legs. I have a nasty burn on the back of my knees and upper thighs from a midday swim on the Fourth. The shoulder and back I expected. But the women's suits expose weird parts of the lower back and upper thigh. Oh well. sunburn only lasts a few days.

Seems like you need to find a pool that's indoors (or at least covered) so you're not exposed to direct sun light and UV rays. The idea of a "Water Shirt" sounds pretty yucky and it brings up memories of the tech suit concept. :eeew: D2

Thanks for posting this. I was just thinking about getting a rashie because sunscreen really isn't enough at the moment.
  • I've used a full body Uv suit from funsunwear.com.au. The owner Colleen Watts will custom make one for you. You can order your colors and pattern. It acts like a drag suit and you feel so fast when you take it off.
  • Boy, this sounds perfect. How well does the suit hold up to a chlorinated pool and do you find yourself getting too hot after a long workout? Given that my workout options are limited. A noon time swim outdoors is sometimes my only alternative. This sounds like a nice protective measure. Thanks for the suggestion. I've used a full body Uv suit from funsunwear.com.au.
