Well, that's a bit of a shame...

The coached workouts threads seem to be restricted to actual USMS members. Fair enough, I guess, but they've always been the main (possibly only) reason I visited the site. I got a lot of my workouts (mainly "Distance Free") courtesy of Chris Layton and Scott Hofteizer over the last 2 years or so, and tips from the other coaches. Thanks for making that possible, chaps!
  • The past workouts are archived, but again, accessible only to members. I do encourage those looking for workouts to look at other threads in the "Workouts" forum, and also at the individual blogs. Top-caliber workouts suitable for a variety of needs posted by top-caliber coaches and swimmers are available in the public areas of the site, and you get to determine whether today is Monday or Thursday. :)
  • Listen, Whatever knowledge I have I give to anyone that asks. For free. Very cool...so what can you offer up? Not that I'm a person who takes advantage of this kind of stuff from experts... But I do get all me free bowell movement info from from Kurt (tried for some help with hallucinations but didn't realize he couldn't help me with drugs to GET them), legal advise from Fort, bike advise from Geek (I do the opposite), and wine advice from Mel so hopefully you can fill the void I have on how to make a lot more money working less?
  • Not really mad...just expressing my grumpy opinion. A change is not really what you are looking for as my point was that other sports like triathlon charge you a heavy price for every piece of information and every piece of technology. Masters swimming is a bargain. I can enter 11 events and swim for a whole weekend for 30-40 dollars at a local meet. Contrast that with 75 to over 500 dollars for a triathlon. Masters swimming has been the exception to the rule. These workouts have been posted free of charge for many years. I believe it may be an effort for the powers that be to make the membership feel there is more value to be a member. I applaud those that give free advice (and I give more than my fair share), but it should not be, in my humble opinion, an expectation.:bighug:
  • As Vive notes, there is a ton of free info on this forum. It's hard to believe people are complaining. Perhaps it's to add more value to membership, as Kurt opines. It's hard to believe the extra revenue is really the incentive ... seems pretty paltry. Maybe it's just designed to encourage non-USMS swimmers to join and participate in the myriad programs available instead of just noodling about on their own.
  • Fort raises a good point. Still plenty of free advice and workouts are posted regularly. Nate McBride posted workout database at one time which includes thousands of workouts (for free) www.swimwestside.com/.../wsscworkoutssearch.html. And for more free stuff...there is also probably a Susan Komen 5K "Race for the Cure" coming up in everybody's neighborhood; you could probably run bandit as I'm sure nobody would notice...I mean they are public roads...

Hi, I also think that it is a pity that the workouts have been restricted to members only. A lot of Masters are training by themselves at times when it suits them between the daily obligations and I'm sue the workouts have been of help or even an inspiration to them. I write workouts (on a honorary basis:)) :bliss: Thank You.

Does anyone know if the workouts from last year are gone for good? Why would those threads be eliminated?

Everybody wants something for nothing. When I was more in to triathlons, I paid 50 dollars a month for a cook book online program... Oops. Listen, Whatever knowledge I have I give to anyone that asks. For free. We are a community of athletes who help each other. That's what keeps the sport strong and welcoming. You say everyone wants something for nothing. Why does everyone need to make a buck off of someone else. I'm done with discussion on this. It just stinks that everyone has to pay now and that the old workouts were even removed. How does that look? Don't get all mad that a few people are expressing their opinions on a new change. It's obvious, if we want the workouts we pay $40. That's not really what it's all about though. Good luck to you.:blah:
