Are your pools open or closed

Our pools were open mid-August until the surge in mid-November. They were only opened then thanks to lobbying by swim coaches and swimmers. Closed now and my local pool says it will not open before 1/1/21 at the earliest. What is happening where you are?
  • Here in Rhode Island they are currently closed. They were open in the summer and autumn...with reduced capacity, and reservations required. But then COVID cases started to surge again so the governor put us in a 14-day “pause” on Nov 30th...and then on Dec 10th extended it by a week. So as it is right now they wonâ€Tmt re-open until Dec 21st. Some people (members of the YMCA) are driving over into Massachusetts YMCA branches since pools are still open there. Personally I donâ€Tmt want to drive that far just to swim. I went about 45 days without swimming at the beginning of the pandemic. Then swam open water all summer. Once it got too cold for that I went to the Y at the end of Oct. I suppose Iâ€Tmll survive another 3-week pause. I still have running and cycling...when there isnâ€Tmt snow. Dan So the “pause” closure here in RI ended yesterday. I was looking forward to getting a swim in after three weeks of only cycling and jogging. I checked the YMCA pool schedule to reserve a time to swim. Thereâ€Tms nothing listed. So I call the branch. “Oh, the pool is closed for routine maintenance until January 4th.” GOD it infuriates me when pools choose wintertime to do routine maintenance. Why in the world donâ€Tmt they do it in summertime when at least some of the pool users could get something of a swim in the open water? Geez. I made a check of the other nearby branches...theyâ€Tmre not allowing visiting members during the pandemic. Dan

Pool at the other gym with a pool, National Fitness Center? Yep, NP. A month.....still no. Another month.......electrical problem with lights (affecting only pool). I finally just cancel (NFC kept their pool at 89 degrees, so that didn't work). Rejoined in October.
  • Well, where I live, I'm happy to do whatever they ask in order to swim 5-6x per week!! Our rules are not arduous. I agree. In some ways its better than before. There are only a handful of pools open in the Seattle area, but I'll take it. Typically you reserve a one hour slot and they allow two per lane (starting from opposite ends of the pool). Reservations book up quickly, so you need to know when they open at each pool if you want to swim regularly.

Let's do our routine maintenance during the 3 weeks pause so we can open right away after! Doh!

It seems that our routine maintenance is being done now so I really hope we can open before the end of the cold season.
  • Quite a few Masters programs are open in Austin. Some have been open since late May. Each have protocols in place...some stricter than others. I swim mostly at UT as they opened in September but also go to Austin Swim Club and Western Athletic. Good to have several programs as all require a sign ups and sometimes UT will fill up quickly as they have only 2 per lane, but Austin and Western allow 3-4 per lane now. We are lucky to have many options!

We are lucky to have many options! I've heard that both Nitro sites are open as well as Waterloo. I can't imagine swimming with 3-4 per lane right now. I think I'd leave if there were that many people I didn't know sharing a lane. But then again I'm in a high risk group so I can't fool around. I always get my own lane at my local pool. I went to Deep Eddy on Christmas eve and there were just 3-4 of us for most of the time I swam.

Here in Virginia Beach our rec centers are still open. When we started back in June, it was 2 to a lane with reservations required at a max of 2 per week. That went to 3 per lane with up to 4 reservations per week. Now back down to 2 per lane and hoping we stay open, as we are in a another surge.

Yeah, ironically, when I go swimming now I don't have to stress about how many are in the lane!
  • Well, where I live, I'm happy to do whatever they ask in order to swim 5-6x per week!! Our rules are not arduous. Edit: Oh. It's you. Again. I'm going to find the ignore option. Let me help: The ignore option is very easy to find, just go to your profile page. Maybe you could even ignore yourself.
