Butterfly, beautiful to watch, difficult to train.
We SDK off every wall.
We're most likely to smack hands with each other and those beside us.
Fly's fun to sprint but no fun when the piano comes down
What did you do in practice today?
the breastroke lane
The Middle Distance Lane
The Backstroke Lane
The Butterfly Lane
The SDK Lane
The Taper Lane
The Distance Lane
The IM Lane
The Sprint Free Lane
The Pool Deck
Also try some drill with fins and then full stroke with fins to get the undulation going :)
I started swimming more fly with fins when I read Fort's post that she swims more fly WITH fins than without, and, you're right; it helps with the undulation. Now, if I can do a better job duplicating that once the fins come off...
Thanks for your suggestion, 'Fly. I think I will try more one arm fly drill with fins and see if that helps, as well as SDK (which I have been doing, but I guess I need to do more).
Note on your kick - every other kick seems to come out of the water before you kick down. Try to keep your feet under the surface at all times in the kick phase, both on the up & down kick.

OK, Orca, I'll work on that. Thanks!
There is no reason to feel bad, losing your goggles in a race can be very disconcerting. Especially when you're trying something new. You say you've been faster in SCM, so I wouldn't worry about this one race. Nowhere to go but up, right?
Your resolution to do fly in a race is admirable. The thing about masters swimming is that no one is going to make fun of our swimming or anything, everyone realizes what a struggle it can be to train and compete in this sport with a "real life." You're only competing against a clock.
Just get back on the horse and ride. No one will be anything but supportive. Post back here when you've done your next fly race!
I completely agree with Chris! I think it's awesome that you got out there and tried it. I'm sure that next time will be an improvement. :applaud:
flyers...one thing that I notice in Elaine's fly - that I struggle a HUGE amount with myself - is a pause in the front of the stroke. It's like the hands hit (mine crash in too by the way) and then there is a pause before the catch and pull. I have tried for a long time to eliminate this pause because it puts a hitch in my stroke and ruins my timing. It makes the second kick (kick hands out) out of time with my kick and I get no power. Any suggestions for eliminating this pause of the hands in the front of my fly???
Thanks for any comments...
my fly looks a lot like Eliane's but with maybe a bit more pause at the front making it look like a two stage event!
Thanks,
JB
:)
OK, anybody who uses the same font as I do after all the %$*@ I have taken from other Forumites is a friend of mine! (You must have missed all of that JB...) :D
I used to come up short on my fly, not getting my arms around far enough to shoulder-width on the recovery. So, I had been working on getting them all the way around and trying not to crash; coming in for a soft landing, instead. The result is that I now have a pause in my stroke; especially on EZ fly. The pause is reduced on my race pace fly, but I still have the crash. :bitching:

I wonder if it's caused by a timing issue with the kick? Watching Elaine's video it seems like she's waiting for her kick to finish before starting the pull. Maybe the problem is the timing of the kick is a little too late.
Elaine,
I am not new to usms but have never posted before so I have no clue about what I'm doing (I'm trying to figure out how to get my signature looking right, without showing my e mail address etc. - I'm a mess)...when I replied to your posy it automatically copied your font. But, hey, I think it looks good no matter how much grief you got for it!:applaud:
JB
:smooch: Thanks, JB, you made my day!
Now, about your signature, click on "User CP" in the upper left portion of the forums screen. Next, click on "Edit Signatures" located under "Settings & Options". Here, you can type in anything you want in the box and it will automatically show up in your posts as your signature. In the "Settings & Options" area, you can do just about everything else you need to and get things looking the way you want.
Good luck!
:chug:

I don't do this consciously, but thanks for pointing this out, Kirk! I seem to have a better feel for the stroke and better timing when I put on my Tyr Burners. I will think about my timing and getting a quicker catch when I hit the pool tomorrow...
Hey, JB, see if you can get somebody to video you, ok? I would be curious to see if we actually do have the same stroke flaws.
