Pensacola Race Management 25k

The folks at Pensacola Race Management said that they were going to put on a 25k swim to go along with their 5k and 10k. (www.3milebridgeswim.org) They've announced the date of their swim, and said that they were taking ideas and drawing up maps, but their website hasn't been updated since June. I know that the race is 8 months away or so, but I'm curious if anyone has heard anything. This is one of my big targets for next season. Thanks, Tim
  • Wow! If so that's an important development... it would one of only five (I think) organized annual races 25K or longer in the United States - along with Tampa Bay, MIMS, Swim Across the Sound, and the Ederle Swim (not counting USA-S Nationals, or the tri-yearly USMS Nationals). Hope they know what they're doing!

5 lengths of the pensacola - gulf breeze bridge will account for 25K... the 3-mile bridge swim is a fantastic event and venue... not perfect but very well executed. I certainly believe this group could host a 25K
  • 5 lengths of the pensacola - gulf breeze bridge will account for 25K... Good on them in any case, but let's hope it's not 5 laps of a 3-mile course. Ugh.

will the cubs have a homestand the weekend of our hypothetical 25K? i'll buy the first round at murphy's in wrigleyville
  • 25K presents both logsitics and safety issues - 5 lengths of this course would allow for feeding & water stations at as little as 1 to 1.5 miles isn't the indiana 25K a lap-swim? 3 laps? 5 laps? i don't enjoy lap swims but if i was determined to swim a 25K this would be a great opportunity Lap courses also tend to be much cheaper, due to said logistical issues. Just not very interesting. Say I'm determined to swim 25K, and I have two options, both 5 laps of a 5K: - buying a flight to Pensacola and swimming laps of the bridge; - or, walking out my front door and swimming laps between North Ave & Ohio St in Chicago (also 5K); Which will I choose? Probably the latter.

  • They have stated, or at least did at one point, that it would be an escorted swim, and that swimmers were responsible for finding their escort kayaks. They haven't yet announced a course. I sent them a proposal (they said they were taking some), but they haven't responded to any emails, nor updated their website since June. The 10k was just an out and back, and that was enjoyable enough. 3 more passes of the bridge? I'm not sure I'd like that too much. I am hoping, though, that the 25k goes off. Living in Baton Rouge, it's close enough to make it relatively convenient.

there must be practically ZERO reward in hosting a 25K swim. I don't believe any open water swimmers are excited about 'lap swims' regardless of distance but they do happen. the 'lap swims' i have done this year alone include the Big Shoulders 5K in Chicago, IL, the Wild Fish 2-mile Swim in Salem, MA, the Steelman 5K in Quakertown, PA, the Rice Aquatics 1-mile in Houston, TX and the Swimmin' in Moonshine 2-mile in Branson, MO. you don't like the course of a race, don't swim it... I appreciate anyone 'crazy' enough to host an open water swim - anywhere... any distance it isn't helpful to be at all thin-skinned when posting on a web board but - geog - the laps of the Pensacola bridge will not be identical... google-map the 'gulf breeze parkway, pensacola, FL' and 'did someone already state what is wrong with marathon swimming?'... seriously?
