I'll be in San Diego for a few weeks and would like to swim the cove with a group. Does anyone on here know of any scheduled group swims?
  • I'd suggest reaching out to the contact folks at lajollacoveswimclub.org/. It's a spectacular place to swim. If you also want pool training, definitely check out the San Diego Masters team at UCSD (recreation.ucsd.edu/.../). Their pools are beautiful, the coach is legendary and they have a HUGE team meaning you'll find a lane with cheerful lanemates no matter what speed you are. The UCSD campus is 10 to 15 minute drive from downtown La Jolla.

That's the most expensive Masters workout I've seen. $10 per day? Maybe I'm just a cheap *** but I'd rather swim alone at random lap swims.

I think I might do the 5:45 swim tomorrow at the Cove. www.triclubsandiego.org/.../42108437.html

I'm pretty sure that the seals are at childrens pool. Just follow your nose to the south. I haven't been there for a bit but I gather they have.

I did the Night Owl Swim Friday evening. What a hoot....I wore a red strobe on my goggle strap and a glow stick necklace,..there were about 50 of us. SPOOKY,...swim out a quarter mile in the darkness. There has been some unusual activity off the La Jolla coast,..last week a strong upwelling current at the B Buoy where a wall of sand came from the trench,..divers had to cling to rocks to be kept from being taken away. And then the earthquake Saturday moring was centered off the coast....simultaneously there were giant squid beaching themselves. Two weeks ago I did the Scripps Pier to La Jolla Cove 2.5k swim,...I had a huge sting ray pass below me at the half way point,..looking like a star-ship,..absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Aug 2 is the 5 mile Tour of the Buoys,...I came in third last year,..third from last! Life is grand if your not weak!

I swam the cove yesterday morning during the slack tide. It was calmer than I've ever seen it, very relaxing. The water is pretty warm too, around 67 degrees. Lots of kelp and lots of other swimmers. I was lucky to get there before the fog rolled in, or I could have been lost at sea! Some kids found a dead humboldt squid which was mostly intact. That sucker was pretty big. It must have washed in from the canyon. I didn't see any seals at "seal beach". What's up with that?
