Stroking was involved! Buoys were sighted, destinations discussed! What a fine thing OW is! The season has now begun! :) :D :bliss:

Great pics! I've never taken a camera out before.
  • Here is my daughter Lauren and yours truly..prior to swimming. Congratulations! On the swim and the daughter! Thanks for posting these pictures! That was probably North Avenue Beach. I was out this morning at 6 a.m. Swimming buddy didn't make it. Air temp about 46, water temp seems to have settled down in mid-50s. Brilliant blue sky, sun already well up it. Watched two cormorants fly in and settle in the water; they ride low, with longish necks, like periscopes. Shall we see you again on September 12, for Big Shoulders? 2.5k or 5k, and the entry fee, part of which goes to support a Great Lakes coalition for clean water, is modest. www.bigshoulders.org
  • You'll see me! I am entered in the 5K! I love Big Shoulders!

Great photos! makes my heart start pounding, excitement brewing.. makes me want to reconsider my no wetsuit stand. thanks for sharing
  • Finally got the first OW swim of the year in last night at Lake in the Hills. Water was 66 - felt pretty good without a wetsuit. Only about 3 of us without wetsuits. Nice turnout for the first Wednesday nighter. Can't wait until next week!!
  • My second OW swim was last weekend. It was a .75 first, and then a 1.5 mile. A question b/c I do not consider myself an OW person: The .75 was a water start about 50 yards out from the beach. It was an overcast day 60 deg and the water temp was 70. Great :) No problem. I lined up right next to the far right buoy as I DO NOT like the "rugby" approach to the start. I had been swimming for a good 2-3 minutes when some girl (I would definitely not say lady!) grabbed my ankle, pulled me back and proceeded to swim right over me. I was not happy. I got a look at her suit, the caps were all the same, and off she went to piss someone else off I'm sure. My question is: Is this normal in OW swimming? If it is, I can certainly get into the spirit, and sprint up to catch such a person and proceed to kick their a#! However, that doesn't seem like good sportsmanship either! :lmao: I was really surprised.

Feels wonderful, doesn't it. :) ... when some girl (I would definitely not say lady!) grabbed my ankle, pulled me back and proceeded to swim right over me. ... My question is: Is this normal in OW swimming? I think it is normal to be run over, kicked, and so forth. I have endured a lot of "handy" swimmers. Body contact isn't necessarily intentional; they could think you were just a big fish or piece of flotsam - a barrier to their forward progress.

I had been swimming for a good 2-3 minutes when some girl (I would definitely not say lady!) grabbed my ankle, pulled me back and proceeded to swim right over me. I was not happy.. I would LOVE for someone to grab my ankle.....they'd be dragging the bottom looking for that entrant.
  • I've been smacked around a little, had my googles knocked off my head, and been pinched off the straight line I was trying to swim but I've never had my ankles grabbed and pulled. I would call that very poor sportsmanship! It shouldn't happen too often (unless that swimmer is entered in all the ow races you do).
