In looking at the results of the National 10k, it seems like the times are considerably slower than what would be expected. Any info on what happened? Rough conditions? Long course? Currents?

I was JUST watching a 20 minute video of the race that I found here....good coverage of the very close mens finish and also a nice interview with the winners and Kate Ziegler. Sounds like she's sticking to the pool.....

I have no idea, but over the years, I have learned to never look at times in an open water swim - only place. Too many factors affect times: conditions, the inexact science of placing buoys (despite GPS), and the swimmers' strategies employed during the swim can all affect finish times.
The more interesting thing is that Kate Zeigler - 1500 meter world record holder - finished 7th in the women in the 10K Open Water Grand Prix.
Julie - I actually meant the USMS 10k, but thanks for the link. It was a really good video.
Rob - Agreed, but given the degree that this was "off", I am just curious.

Oh, I can tell you all about that also. I was there and it took me WAY longer than I had anticipated. We were fighting an awful tide for a lot of the race and barely making any forward progress at times. Even when I got done the bay looked very calm, the same way it had in the morning, but there definitely was something going on with that water. I never felt like it was choppy, just that I was using every bit of energy I had and still swimming in place. This was my first 10K so I have no idea what my time should be, but it definitely shouldn't be 36 min/miles!
The course was an inverted triangle, the part that was perpendicular to the beach is claimed to have been into a tidal current. Not sure how much of the issue was current and how much was simply a long course.
Many seemed to think it took about an hour longer than they expected. I would agree with that.
It was a long day in the water.
