I tried my hand at open water swimming last year. I participated in the hermosa to Manhattan beach swim. i hope to do more this year. I know there are always people to swim with at the hermosa guard tower, but are there other locations to hook up and swim with people you don't know? What about lakes? any tips would be appreciated. suares

I'm not from Southern Cali but whenever I'm out there the definitive source for ocean swimming is the Morton Salt Report www.mortonsaltreport.homestead.com/index.html A subsidy of Southern California Aquatic Masters. Usually as the season get going they start posting regular meeting locations and times for semi-organized workouts.

ChrisM: Saturdays are good for me. What does MB stand for, Manhattan Beach? CraigIII: At this point, i'm looking to practice and not participate in a race. So i'd like to hook up with people that swim open water. CLassen: Excellent link!

You can always hook up with people down at La Jolla cove. go to www.lajollacoveswimcove.com they have events every month and if long distance swims are in you future there are a large number of channel swimmers there. for more swim events try the morton salt report (google it). More than you can possibly imagine.

Lake swims. Most open after Labor Day, check out Bonelli Park, Castaic, etc. group ocean swims. LA tri club has group swims, check the calendar on the la tri club website, don't need to be a member to join them. All up and down the coast, Alamitos Bay to Malibu. Also check out Pacific Masters, I think it is, they meet at the guard tower just north of the MB pier at 8 am on Sats, I believe.

I am coming to So Cal from 9/13/06 through 9/17/06 for the Nebraska v. USC football game and staying in Redondo Beach and I have friends who live in Mahattan Beach. I checked the links in the posts above and I see that there is a weekly organized group swim. Problem is it ends the week before I get there. Is anyone aware of other group swimming that I could join on 9/14 and/or 9/15? I'm not looking for a race, just people to swim with. Thanks.
