I tried my hand at open water swimming last year. I participated in the hermosa to Manhattan beach swim. i hope to do more this year.
I know there are always people to swim with at the hermosa guard tower, but are there other locations to hook up and swim with people you don't know?
What about lakes?

You can always hook up with people down at La Jolla cove. go to www.lajollacoveswimcove.com they have events every month and if long distance swims are in you future there are a large number of channel swimmers there.
for more swim events try the morton salt report (google it). More than you can possibly imagine.
