Is it just me or do world records in short course meters lack the prestige of world records in long course? And are the 50's just not as big a deal as the longer races? Maybe I'm just showing my age?

My original thought re this thread was open competition.
But re Masters records --- this forum has been most enlightening in illuminating the depth of knowledge, dedication, and accomplishment of peoples abilities to do things that would have been labeled "impossible" a decade or two ago. Swimming is great sport because it gives an objective measure of performance and any records set in masters swimming I truly feel reestablish the perceived boundaries of human potential, which benefits all.
