University of Washington Cutting Swimming

University of Washington is cutting both their men's and women's swimming programs. I hope that the people who do their Masters training there aren't affected. Usually, it's the men's program that gets cut. But, here, they cut both of the swimming programs. www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/.../21029.asp
  • Very sad. How many colleges or universities are there in Washington that have a swim team? Let's see... There's WSU, Whitman, Whitworth, Central (or did they drop theirs?), PLU, UPS, Western (as a club sport) Any others?
  • Very sad. How many colleges or universities are there in Washington that have a swim team? There are a few, but UW was the only Division I men's team in Washington. Actually the only one in the Pacific Northwest. No schools in Oregon or Idaho have a men's team either. Should this decision hold I believe the closest University with a Division I men's team will be Cal. That's about 800 miles away. I'm probably wrong about this, but I can't think of any closer teams. Actually Seattle University is transitioning to Division I, but it will probably be a long road before they are really a viable team at the DI level in swimming.

I wonder what percentage of swimmers graduated vs. footballers in this school? I'll bet that's not a easily accessible fact. I'll bet that the number of footballers who have made it to the NFL is. Some say death to noodlers. I say death to college football. Make it a club sport.
  • They had some great swimmers come from that program in the 70s (Robin Backus, Steve Tallman, etc.) Did Scott Lautman go there? Yes, Scott went to UW. They had lots of great swimmers in the mid '70s. Lots still compete in masters, too. Rick Collela, Alan Bell and Bill Penn come to mind.
  • The Seattle news (KOMO) quoted the athletic department as saying the main reason was the lack of sales of football tickets. The lack of football tickets sales is clearly the result of a history of recruiting incompendency...such as 1. recruiting a dumbo quarterback in jake locker, while turning thumbs down on the kid from Prosser who is now a All American with Boise State (and wanted to play for UW). 2. recruiting the ghetto busters from LA that USC or UCLA rejected as probable jailbait and usually end up in King County jail. 3. being politically correct hiring a washed up minority coach from the worst football program in the United States -Notre Dame...and then keeping him for five years so as to continue to be sensitive to minorities in Seattle. 4. letting Rick Neuhesel go because he wouldn't stand in line to bang tainted AD Barbara Hedges. i guess too many of the LA ghetto busters in front.
  • cantwait4bike: are you kidding? I really hope so. Even if you are I can't believe you'd post something like that. Wow.
  • This is very sad news indeed. The UW football team has shown to be trouble through the years, getting suspended twice, I think, for recruiting malfeasance. The swim programs routinely have the highest GPAs and graduation rates of all sports, yet get the axe first off. The ASU program is ok for a couple of more years, until an endowment is in place to make it permanent. If UW only has 6 lanes, that is a problem to recruit with and establish an endowment. They had some great swimmers come from that program in the 70s (Robin Backus, Steve Tallman, etc.) Did Scott Lautman go there?

Okay Mr. Gates and Mr. Allen get your checkbooks out.
  • this is straight from a friend of mine who was asst football coach for 7 years. if you don't want to believe it, fine! stick your head in the sand and complain about them eliminating the M&W swim programs. afterall, it would be unthinkable to actually go after the root cause and solve the problem along with bringing back the swim programs.......yep always easier for some
