Bousquet went a 20.94 today...in long course meters.
  • 20.94 is an amazing achievement by Bousquet. Craig Lord is in rare form (swimnews.com/.../6827): He is now the first sub-21 man in history - not the history of swimming, you understand, but the first sub-20sec man at the dawn of a new sport. The old one is dead, well and truly. I'm really not following this. I go to the pool and work on stroke technique, SDK's, breakouts, speed, etc. I enter meets and race. Doing fast times depends on good stroke technique, correct pacing, being well-rested, etc. The suit I'm wearing is just a cross of a t or a dot of an i in my race preparation. I didn't swim as fast as I wanted at PNA Championships because I was sick; my Tyr Tracer Light suit didn't miraculously save the day. If the scales of the sport are changing due to technology (a la tennis in the 80's and golf in the 90's) then I have no problem with that. Does anybody here really think that what we're doing is not swimming anymore? For me, the core experience hasn't really changed at all.
  • While I think that Craig Lord is a little over the top(or a lot),I do think there is something wrong when I hear of a good time and the first thing I think is"what suit were they wearing."

Things are messy now, no question. Once an approved list of suits is released, and swimmers aren't able to compete in non-approved suits, I think things will quiet down, we will get used to the new speeds that elite swimmers can now attain, etc. But what we're doing was, is, and will continue to be swimming.

  • anyone else wondering why he switched from a no logo silver/grey suit from the 100 to the red suit in the 50? and in Ande's video post, is the redline for real? was the entire heat under WR time? I thought on 1 and 2 broke the record....
  • I don't really think the question is "are the suits making a difference" anymore. It's obvious that the suits make some impact on times - the bigger question is when will it stop?! Have swim suits reached their technological end point, or is their still more that can be accomplished (new fabric technology, stitching techniques)? It will be nice when we can get back to watching the raced without a 10 minute dialogue on new suits!
  • I think that the reason you dont follow this is that (no offense) you are comparing yourself to the world's elite swimmers. A tenth of a second in a 50 is a big deal to these guys. To break the WR by .3 is ridiculous. This was his best time by .7 What? And we don't know to what extent, but these suits are making a huge difference. Bernard rips off a 46.9 in semis and then 47.5 in finals in an older model suit (he chalked it up to nerves / pressure). I cannot speak for you, but I want to go a 24.9 in the 50 free sthis summer. If I go 25.2 I'm sure I'll be some what happy. My "range" is pretty big. Plus I'll feel satisfied just knowing I put (some of) the training in and gave a good shot. Other than water, my experience as a swimmer has nothing in common with the pros. In no way am I suggesting that I am elite. :cane: What I don't understand is Lord's assertion that the speedsters in France were doing something other than swimming, just because some of them went unexpectedly fast. Maybe he believes they're tech-doping, and that invalidates their efforts? Good luck with your 50 free this summer!

He wasn't asserting that they were doing something other than swimming; he was suggesting that the suit made a difference in the outcome of the race. I think it is atleast reasonable to suggest that the suit made a difference in the men's 100 free final.
