It's been 26 years since my last workout, now that I'm taking classes at the local college and have access to the pool I've joined USMS and plan to get back into some sort of shape (other than oval).
Any suggestions for someone who needs to get back in shape?
Just take it one day at a time. You will be struggling from the beginning but the more you swim, the easier it will get. If you feel worn after only doing about 1500, then get out.

I agree with the above quote. Several years ago I started back after a 20 year layoff. Initially I was worn out after 400yds (but then again, I'm a sprinter), but now I have days where I can get up to 6000yds done in a workout. When I first started I didn't think it would be do-able but it is.
:bliss:
One word of advice (and I'm not trying to call you old and I am not just saying this because it is on every single cardiovascular machine in a gym)--make sure with your doctor that you do not have any other risk factors (heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc) that might impair your ability to begin an exercise program.
Start off slow, don't get frustrated, and have fun!
Thanks for the support. I'm going to drop in at the college pool today on the way home from work and see what I can do. I doubt I'll set any records (except perhaps slowest lap) but I've got to start somewhere.
Cheers!
Thanks, I did get a checkup and other than weight I'm fine. The pool was closed for water treatment the past few days, I am going Saturday afternoon. My friends have promised not to refer to me as a Beluga Whale :afraid:
Thanks for that Orca! :applaud:
I dropped in Saturday to loosen up, then volunteered with some kids from Special Olympics. All in all about 500 yards and it felt good, but my shoulder reminded me I need to stretch before swimming.
Thanks again.
