Michael Phelps and a bong? Is there any truth to this?

are we sure that's Phelps? If true, he seems to have a habit of screwing up in the very next Novembers after Olympics... anyone here from the UK? How reputable is "news of the world"? How could he be so careless?

First, he was "dropped" by Kelloggs but they were gonna let him go anyway after his contract. This looks like a penalty to him, but is it really? Could have been more mutual than we know. Kelloggs looks good and Phelps takes a coporate hit but it is meaningless to both. Meaningless, you say? He won't be getting any more free cereals; he'll have to buy his own. Meaningless?

Three months is pretty weak. Should have been at least six months, but then he would have missed Worlds. Can't have that. Also highlights what a joke drug testing has become. The only ones who get caught are those who are stupid or careless. The face of USA Swimming, stuck in a bong. Way to elevate the sport.

I know I'm late to this discussion, but can I just say that if anyone deserves a bong hit, it's Phelps. Hope no one ever sees some of my college photos... ditto that. i will only accept sponsorship from the likes of e-z wider and makers mark.... all candid photos... stumbling or dribbling or stuffing mallowmars (or brownies) in my face will gain me extra bonus dollars! i should be on the michael phelps agent advisory board.

No competitive advantage via pot. It's a personal issue, not a competitive one. Not personal anymore when you have become the face of USA Swimming. Three months is a token suspension, chosen so as not to interfere with Worlds.

He was arguably the biggest face and name of the 2004 Athens Games...why no suspension for the DUI?
  • Well, Hopefully the news media can focus on A-Rod testing positive for steroids. This is a real news story compared to a 23 year old having fun after winning 14 gold medals in non sprint events, except the 100 fly. Of course, A-Rod won't be treated like a rapist like some in the media treated Phelps. Well, at least the paparazzi will be leaving Baltimore. Gosh, no matter where you live, if you are the top news story, paparazzi will flock to your town and stalk you. Kudos to Seth Meyers segment on SNL but he got the number of gold medals wrong and there is heavy swimming going on during non-Olympic years. Whoever took that picture is a complete tool! Can this guy be any more of a loser to snap that picture? Phelps swam his butt off for the last 8 to 10 years and he lost millions that he so rightly deserved because some guy had to be a tool and snap a picture with his camera phone.
  • Well, Hopefully the news media can focus on A-Rod testing positive for steroids. This is a real news story This is not a real news story. He tested positive many years ago when steroids were legal and everyone was using them. Big whoop.
  • Seriously? Millions that he so rightly deserved? Look, it's not like he found a cure for cancer. He reaped the benefits of living in a society that richly rewards its sports superstars (not to mention its CEOs) and was showered with endorsements. And if he loses any money out of this deal, there's no reason to go looking for the guy with the camera phone. Just look in the mirror. He did get alot of people watching NBC this in the middle of the summer. Plus, viewership went up compared to Athens viewership. Although NBC should have cut him a check, he did deserve millions unlike those courtless banking executive who got bonuses for destroying their companies.
  • A "fair" salary is one in which the worker gets an equitable share of the wealth they create. Market forces dictate salaries of employees. That's the way it works in capitalism. Fairness is irrelevant.
  • This is not a real news story. He tested positive many years ago when steroids were legal and everyone was using them. Big whoop. Fort, I don't know because the sample was from 2003 and it was hidden from everyone where other players get raked over the coals for their alleged drug use. It is odd that steroids didn't change A-Roid's appearance like Barry Bonds. When you see Bonds from his Pittsburgh Pirates days, it is like it is a different person.
