Making a cold tolerable

I have had a cold for the past 6 days and for the last two I've found a combination of drugs that have made it tolerable enough to let me swim. I take Nyquil (generic kind) an hour before bedtime and Musinex D just before I leave for work. At approximately 5pm, I take a 1/2 dose of the Musinex D. I feel good enough to practice for a little while (45 min). If you have things that work for you please pass them along. Thanks, Coach T.

I like my neti pot too but Zicam homeopathic cold remedy seems to help once there are symptoms; Walgreen's and CVS even sell it. I've also felt better once in the water with a cold...

i like my netti pot, but i love my grossan hydro pulse sinus system thingy! www.hydromedonline.com/hp.html and when that doesn't work.... copious amounts of kimchi or bubby's sauerkraut. That looks interesting. I use a neti pot and a squeeze-action sinus irrigator, but the hydromed looks even better. Why kimchi and sauerkraut?

It sounds like a couple of people here might prefer their doctors exam them without washing their hands. Good luck with that. Hand sanitizers are a good alternative to hand washing. They kill the germs as well but do not dry out the hands. You also don't have to worry about germs accumulating on the pump, since you don't touch it after sanitizing. For colds, I take Excedrin PM or something similar just as the cold is setting in. A good night's rest early on helps the body fight off the germs. This always works, except when it doesn't.
  • With the exception of YMCAs, most pools are too cold and chlorinated for rhinoviruses to survive the waters thereof. I am pretty sure.

It sounds like a couple of people here might prefer their doctors exam them without washing their hands. But they do wear gloves..................... Which brings me to another point. At Health Food stores where the food is sold in bulk (and ladled or scooped out), they insist we wear those one-size fits all plastic gloves. However the way I see it is: if my hand is dirty (that's why they want me to wear a glove before scooping up food) then that dirt will be deposited on the (outside of the) glove as I pick it up (from the outside, perforce) to put it on. And so the surface that might come in contact with the food is soiled. Hand sanitizers are a good alternative to hand washing. They kill the germs as well but do not dry out the hands. You also don't have to worry about germs accumulating on the pump, since you don't touch it after sanitizing. Agree 101%

I have had a cold for the past 6 days and for the last two I've found a combination of drugs that have made it tolerable enough to let me swim. SHOULD you be swimming when you have a cold? It's how comfortable you are with your medications but the fact is that, like it or not, your runny nose is discharging into the pool and spreading the cold virus/germ/microbe/bacterium/whatzit....... Or does the chlorine really kill these without fail?

That's a good question and one that I'm at a loss for an answer.
