Glad I found this site! I swam competitively for about 10 years until my freshman year of college where I just gave it up because I was burned out.
It's been 20 years and I just started up a few weeks ago. I had a break of 10 days or so from an illness but I am back in the swing of things. I'm focused right now on building my endurance again and that is coming along. It's amazing how good technique is sooo key to swimming fast. I have about 50lbs I can lose and yet I can keep up or pass many people in the pool who have been swimming regularly much longer than I have.
It's great to be doing this again!

Good advice. I have to get up quite early to get to the pool and swim before I come back home and get the kids up and out the door for school and be on my way to work.
I was quite sleepy this morning and decided to take the morning off and snooze. I want to feel that pull to get back in the pool and not over do it. I can't wait to get back in tomorrow. :bliss:
I'm the same way. I swim 6-730am (up at 515) on my way to work with my brother. Then off to work for the day. My wife stays at home, so at least I have the kids covered! Right now I'm just swimming MWF and "Try" to go to the gym T/Th (only Tue this week):bed:. I hope to start doing Saturday AM too very soon, but at another pool and with another group to switch things up.
If you have a local team or a "buddy" to swim with it really helps. There is a team at my pool but I don't particularly care for the coach so I choose to swim either on my own or with my brother. With my background writing workouts is no problem.
Just remember to "keep it fun" and not to get discouraged. Its gonna take time to "feel like a swimmer" again. I've pretty much figured on a year to be "where I want to be", which is maybe too long, but gives me plenty of time without putting pressure on myself. Enjoy! :wiggle:
Mary-welcome back to swimming :-) Do you have team in Columbus you are training with yet? I know there are several around the area. I live near Dayton and train down there but work in downtown Columbus. Maybe I will see you at a meet in the future. I'll be the idiot swimming the 200 fly :-)
Have fun and good luck with the swimming.

Welcome back.....I'm one of those with a similiar story. 15 years off....now been back about 6-8 weeks. Take it slow and don't over due...or you'll burn out again! :D
ROFL....I was a flyer when I started to swim (about 10-11 years old) but then puberty hit and that was that!
Nah, not in a club yet. I feel like I need some time to feel competent in the water again when it comes to workouts. There is a fitness class that practices in the pool I use, however they start too late (6am--yeah too late! LOL!) for my time schedule. And I'm not feeling quite ready yet---but hopefully soon.
I have looked online at some clubs and once I feel I am ready, I'll do some more serious scouting. My goal is to swim in a meet again someday.
I feel so great after swimming....I really have a lot of energy. I don't get the same feeling when I hit the gym. So it's really addicting. I still switch it up by hitting the gym too. I'm working on upper body weight lifting to help me in the pool. My legs are pretty solid. I can leg press more than most guys in the gym. :laugh2: (250lbs). Just 'cause I'm fat doesn't mean I'm not strong. :)
Hey Mary ~ Welcome Back
I started back about 2 months ago after a 20 year layoff. I just wanted to encourage you to stay with it. I felt like I hit a bit of a wall after about 3 weeks in the water, but pushed through and I'm feeling great now. I had some of the same questions (SDK?) and concerns about jumping right in with a Masters team. I think the biggest lesson I'm learning is that I need far more rest than before. Rest is, as it should be, a much bigger part of my regimen than it was in the old days.
When you are ready for competition, what events would you do?
Stay after it!

Mike..cool! I'm so glad there are so many others like us here on this board...getting back in it after all this time. In many ways it's like I never left the pool but in many ways it does feel like 20 years...especially with endurance.
I really enjoyed the longer races at the end of my swimming career...especially the 500 free. I might want to do that. I was also pretty good at backstroke. Almost made J.O's when I was an age grouper but then I aged up and couldn't quite make the cut. I like IMs too. But gotta get that fly down!
