I'm curious if anyone who is not involved with USMS or their LMSC knows what rules are being proposed (aside from the no nationals outside US we've already discussed)?
Personally I'd love to see more attempts by USMS to post polls on this forum that summarize the proposals and for the LMSC's to try and "poll" their own constituents as to how they would like for them to vote on the proposals.
With the convention starting next week I really haven't dug to deeply into it and have not heard anything from the members of our LMSC as to what they will vote for/against...granted I could ask but in general I think most of us would like to have th info filtered down and sent out/posted.
Paul,
The Rules proposals are all available here:
www.usms.org/.../proposals.pdf
You can also get there from the USMS home page by clicking:
Administration >>> Convention >>> 2008 Convention Information >>> "Proposed Changes to USMS Rules and Legislation"
Rules proposals are all numbered sequentially, like R-1, R-2, etc. Housekeeping proposals are numbered like HK-1, HK-2. Long Distance proposals are numbered like LD-1, LD-2, etc.
This packet became available on the web (to those "not involved with USMS") before it was mailed to the LMSC delegates. Being "involved" with USMS doesn't mean we get any inside scoop. I'm on the Board but I got no advance information - I had to read them like everyone else!
Anna, I'm not saying that anyone has "inside scoop"...but you have pointed out exactly what I'm getting at...people have to dig thru a lot of stuff to get to the basic information that will be voted on. Why not make it a more inclusive process and post polls here...?
I would suggest that you would get far more feedback than ever before on how a broad cross section of your membership feels about what decisons are made by USMS...you would probably even pull more members onto the site if it was available in that format vs. the documentation you've proved a link for.
Even better, I'd like for our LMSC to put this information into a simple word document that is sent out to all the subscribing members...I have no idea how our represenatives will be voting on issues like nationals locations, team scoring, wetsuits, etc....

OK, Paul, I'll spoon-feed you. Here are the ones that will probably take up a lot of the discussion:
R-18, meets held within boundaries of USMS
R-30, club scoring
R-31, club scoring
LD-16, wetsuits
LD-17, wetsuits

I'm against wetsuits, too. If some of my *former* associates had worn wetsuits, I would not be free to peruse this forum. And why should USMS create a new division to help grow interest in open water swimming? They are doing just fine with 120 people at the national open water events, let USA triathlon get all of the money from the hundreds of wetsuit swimmers! Elitists unite as aqueous luddites! Blinders for everyone.
I definitely think open water qualifying races should not permit wetsuits for their races, although they should have a separate division at races . I have swam a couple of races when I was really out of shape and a wetsuit let me keep up with the leaders.

dear jim or leslie,
whaaaat???????
Sorry, I could not find a sarcasm emoticon.
Allowing wetsuit swimmers (as a separate division, of course) is good business, if we can get it. Issuing forth a blanket statement that one does not want to allow wetsuits at all just does not make any sense.

i agree, and believe that it should always be a separate div. regardless of the h2o temp, but this does add burden to the event directors.
i have participated in several events this year that were cancelled midway due to the enthusiastic participation of many swimmers who were unable to handle the currents. the inclusion of wet-suits certainly added significantly to the number of registrants.
