Do we need chlorine removal shampoo?

If you wear silicone swim cap, the hair doesn't get that much chlorine, does it?

Some folks wear the cap in such a way that it only covers the top of their head, leaving 2/3 of their hair uncovered.
  • I don't rinse before but wear a cap and after swimming use "Take Out" which is a shampoo that takes out all chemicals. It is sold by my local salon and is a local product. I love it. Works better than any true anti-chlorine shampoo. So far, no green hair.
  • Wet hair +/- conditioner cap shampoo of your choice Seems to be the best set of things one can do. I have not noticed bleaching. I use L'Oreal hair products. A greater concern is facial skin turning to parchment. I do wish caps were more generally encouraged.

My colorist notices that the chlorine gives my hair a slimy texture when wet...Which product(s) from the John Frieda Collection do you recommend? I went online and there were several listed. I just started using Kiehl's(sp?) too early to say whether it works...

I have always found green hair attractive.

  • I found that the chlorine removal shampoos left my hair more damaged than the others. What I did instead was wear a cap, keep my hair relatively short, and use Aveda hair detoxifier (with Aveda conditioner of some sort). Some stylists recommend wetting your hair in the shower beforehand and putting a little bit of conditioner in too. That may be more worthwhile if you have longer hair but for me the aforementioned combo works fine. Yes, the cap traps more heat but it keeps hair out of your face and enables you to have decent hair. YMMV but that has been my experience.

I really like Aloe Rid from Nexxus for a shampoo: www.nexxus.com/.../sl_aloe_rid_gentle_glarifying_shampoo.html Then I need to follow it up with some condititioning sludge like Matrix Biolage Ultra Hydrating balm: www.matrixbeautiful.com/.../hydratherapie.aspx I do the conditioner under my cap trick, and I like Paul Mitchell's traditional leave in "The Conditioner". IMO, UltraSwim is not a great product, but could certainly work for your hair type. It's great because it's easy to find, but I find the more expensive salon stuff does work a little better. Laura
  • Hi, years ago I read in a magazine that rinsing your hair with soda water after you swim would remove 99% of the chlorine. I remember trying it and it worked. However these days just shampooing and conditioning after swimming works well.
  • Is it made by Ciba? Close. Cibu.
