hi there, im a UK masters swimmer and was wondering how you guys prepare for a meet in terms of nutrition? do any of you carb load? Im curious as to whether it is worthwhile in the week of a competition. I normally load up about 2 days before my meet. Any insight regarding nutrition etc from across the pond would be greatly appreciated :)

When we went to Camp Akomac and Camp Chicopee, They used to be sure that every day was a balanced meal of Carbs, Protein and Fat. It seemed to me they did overload a little on carbs. But when I think abought it now is there much differance on training days and pre-race days. It seems to me that Protein and Fats were in equal parts and a bit more of the Carbs. Protein 30 percent, Fat 30 percent, Carbs 40 percent.

I carb loaded in the local Witherspoons, and down at the pie and mash shop too! I am told that unless you're going "scientific nutso" about nutrition, you might benefit from a little carbing up 1 to 2 days before you swim.
  • I use it as an excuse to eat 2 desserts the night before the meet.:wiggle:
  • I've been told and read that if you want to carb load, it should be, 'healthy' carbs. Examples are whole-wheat breads/pastas, brown rice, whole grains, etc.

Bannana split with 3 huge scoops of ice cream, Strawberries, Butterscotch Syrup and Chocolate Syrup and a Cherry on top. From the Jumbo Ice Cream Parlor in Hamilton Ontario or Stoney Creek Dairy Bar. See Banana Split www.stoneycreekdairy.com/Dairy Bar.htm They still sell the Super Dupper Sundae if you could eat one you would be able to get another free. I have never heard of anyone who could finish one.

Hi, We are all different in terms of what we need to eat. But when it comes to carb load, this is some thing you do when you want to increase the glycogen stored in the muscles. This is something good if you are planning a long race and can not replenish during the race, i.e for more the 60 or 90 minutes, like triathlons or open water swims. For a 50m free it will not do you any good. But staying well when it come to overall nutrion will of course help you! One other aspect could however be that during a meet you can not always plan when or what to eat, so a litte extra carbs will probably not hurt you!
