sportsillustrated.cnn.com/.../index.html From the man whose WR has been broken four times in the last two months..... I like his attitude. He could never be a USMS swimmer. Too much whining here about everything.

Bravo to Popov. This is the mindset of a winner. The article should be taped up in the German swim team's locker room. If Popov were swimming now and not wearing the suit, my money would still be on him to win. Bet he'd have a smoke just before he dove in just for fun. The guy's quote was awesome!

NASCAR is a joke. Fake American (mostly) sedans that turn left. Suits don't win races, swimmers do. I think that is Popov's point. Sure there is a difference in suits. But Tyr has a new suit too. No one's really used it yet. I spoke to an NCAA Div 1 head coach and he says the Tyr is just as fast as the LZR. But who knows for sure? I don't care. The suit is legal by FINA. Income tax is apparently legal too as Wesley Snipes discovered. So we deal with it and do our best to work within the system we have.

Agree with the whining comment but the " I would not wear it" is plain stupid and also not truthfull. If the suits (LZR and others) give even a 1/10th advantage, he would be wearing it + making a nice sponsorship deal with it. "I would rather do something more fascinating, to bring more effort into it to get to the medal instead of using some help," the Russian said." I am sure he would rather do that - but the fact of the matter is that some guy went 21.28 -- that is more than 1/2 a second faster than Popov ever did outside his famous time trial swim.

Speaking of Popov, the top THREE swimmers in the 50 free semis at French trials ALL swam under Popov's old World Record. All wearing LZR suits.

“Technology is only as good as the athlete’s validation of it and their support and belief in it," ..............snip............... I'm not spending $500 on a suit anytime soon. I need a faster computer more than I need to swim just a bit faster. And if you know how to fiddle with your Excel Custom Cell Formatting and Function Manipulations, you can have your spreadsheets take seconds off your best times..................

I am not concerned about access to the suits at the Olympics, the TYR suit is probably about as fast as the LZR and pretty much everyone will have some hightech suit.I am more concerned about the "arms race" in age group and Masters where not everyone wants to spend $550 for a suit that lasts 5 swims. I too am concerned about this. I would hate to see 12 yr olds with AA times demanding LZRs from their parents. Even worse would be parents succumbing to the pressure. Suddenly the annual cost of the sport goes up by $500 or more.
  • Huh? how is FINA not allowing swimmers access to the new suits? Does FINA allocate who signs what endorsement deals with what manufacturers? No. And until they do, could all the FINA bashers get off FINA's back about 'allowing' access to the suits? FINA has nothing to do with it except to say 'yup, it's legal'. Paul Paul - My comment was not about FINA, I was referring to an earlier thought where NASCAR was referenced, suggesting someone at a NASCAR race would have something no-one else did. I don't bash FINA, USS, USMS, or any other sport governing body.
  • Until they say NO to any suit , then let the world class people have at it. They have sponsors who pay for it all!:groovy:

Here’s a video of Alexander Popov in the water -and he’s wearing just his “own skin” (except for a pair of old fashioned briefs): :applaud: www.youtube.com/watch Dolphin 2 ;)
