Critique on 50m & 100m free

I just swam a 100m free, 50m free, and 50m fly at a short course this past weekend. My wife stuck around to video me in both freestyle events. They're on youtube now. Not sure if they're clear enough but I'd appreciate any critiquing or suggestions for improvement. I'm in lane 4 on both with the yellow cap. The 100 was split 29.46/30.40 for a 59.86 Don't know the 50 split but might try and do that next time. Thanks folks. 50m Free youtube.com/watch 100m Free youtube.com/watch :bouncing:
  • The Good - the Bad - and the Ugly The Bad = Start and Finish, got work on that start -- if your feet and hands enter at the same time, you are in trouble. And the glide in the finish is ok for a 1500, but not a 50. The Ugly = going out in 29+, when you can swim under 26 is just plain UGLY. I agree with both comments (bad & ugly). I've got to find a place to practice starts, the only practice I get is at meets since the pool I swim at has no blocks and diving is prohibited. Will work on the finish as well. On the 100, I wasn't sure about pacing and it's been almost a year since I've competed so I didn't want to die on the last fifty. Will work on pacing more. Thanks!
  • in your 100 you should go out much faster between 1.0 - 1.5 off your 50 26.9 - 27.4 you should come home 1.5 - 2.5 compared to what you went out in 28.4 - 30.4 turn over faster indicate the lane you are in on youtube I just swam a 100m free, 50m free, and 50m fly at a short course this past weekend. • The start needs work. If you are going to use the track style, you should be into the water fast, not reaching for the rafters. If you want to jump out, try diving over a barrel into a small hole. Your stroke looks OK but slow for a 100. If you were trying to not die on the last 50, why swim the 100? If you want to swim fast, don't be afraid of dying at the end. That way you know you used everything in the race.
  • Real real nice!!! Practice your dives...technically, it's your only apparent weakness.
  • The chick was fast in your 100.... Yeah she was. On the heat sheets we had turned in really close times so I had a feeling it'd be close. It looked like she had a stronger kick than me.
  • On your 50, I think that you could eliminate the 2nd breath on the first length. You took a breath at about the 18m mark then took a breath 2n strokes before the turn. For a sub-26 race, I would concentrate on 1 breath when you reach the flags on the first length, then 2 breaths on the 2nd 25. Paul

The Good - the Bad - and the Ugly The Good = the 50 looked really good, stroke looks fine to me and overall a pretty fast turnover. The Bad = Start and Finish, got work on that start -- if your feet and hands enter at the same time, you are in trouble. And the glide in the finish is ok for a 1500, but not a 50. The Ugly = going out in 29+, when you can swim under 26 is just plain UGLY.

Great swims. You have a long powerful stroke. The turn-over on the 100 looked as if you're pacing for a 200 or longer. Go out harder and die like a man. Other than this...the only critique might be on the height of your start. Try for less air time...and become more like a dart. A single hole entry will really help get you moving as you pierce the surface. Your 25 on the 50 should get you into the 57~58 range no problem.

I thought both swims were good. I agree with everyone else that you could definitely improve your start. Also, your kick fades badly from the 50 to the 100. Most (not all) of the sprinters I knew and currently know have very impressive leg drive. Keep the legs working and learn to develop serious power with each stroke. Remember, you really don't have that many strokes in a 50 or 100. Every stroke counts, and you need to generate maximum power.
