Critique on 50m & 100m free

I just swam a 100m free, 50m free, and 50m fly at a short course this past weekend. My wife stuck around to video me in both freestyle events. They're on youtube now. Not sure if they're clear enough but I'd appreciate any critiquing or suggestions for improvement. I'm in lane 4 on both with the yellow cap. The 100 was split 29.46/30.40 for a 59.86 Don't know the 50 split but might try and do that next time. Thanks folks. 50m Free youtube.com/watch 100m Free youtube.com/watch :bouncing:

I thought your stroke looked really powerful! Converted to yards, you swam a 23.2 in the 50, and a 53.6 in the hundred. That's smokin!
  • Really your stroke looks great. I think you're a natural. As others have said, your turnover was way too slow in the 100. The good news is you've got incredible room for improvement and you're already under one minute. I think you could swim a 57 tomorrow if you were more aggressive! No one has mentioned your turns yet, but in general they looked very good. You didn't glide into the walls and came off the walls strong. Yeah, the start needs some work. We used to call the starts where swimmers' hands and feet hit at the same time "lawnchair dives." :)

Great 50! I thought your starts were strong, though. Not saying that they couldn't be improved, but you were up first on both races. Did you do some SDK's there? Have to agree with Paul on the breathing: one breath down and two back - maximum. Practice it in training until it becomes second nature. You sold yourself short on the 100, though. With a sub 26 fifty you should be able to go out in a 27.50 and come back in a 29.50 for at least a 57. You held back way too much on that first 50. Congratulations on two very solid swims. Syd
  • If that's you doing the squats in your avatar, then I'd say they're definitely paying off. Your turns in the 100 were very strong compared to the person swimming next to you. In fact, it looked like she was reeling you in (swimming faster than you) on each 25 and then you would re-gain a big lead on each turn. Perhaps you are turning over a little too slowly. Your dives aren't great but whatever you're doing under water while in streamline is obviously strong. Perhaps you need to swim against tougher competition as well? Faster competition may bring out better effort... Just a thought...

Being a sprinter...this has always been my mantra. Go out hard and die like a man...was used especially for the 200 free. The trick is in using easy speed to take it out fast.
