It is a well known fact that Australian worship their swimmers. We have a relatively small population and our swimmers acquire star status. They cannot go anywhere in public without a mob af fans. I do not believe this happens anywhere else on earth, especially in the USA. Our swimmers can remain up there to be hero worshipped so long as they do nothing wrong. Even so we have a tall poppy syndrome and sadly take them back down again. Eamon's name would be mud, and he would be treated very badly by everyone here in Australia if it was found he was taking drugs. So much so that living here would be almost untenable. You have to understand us, our small population and the way we revere our swimmers, in order to understand that taking drugs to be number one in the sport is just not an option. My god, and Australian just HATE to be disgraced.

It's interesting how fractions are perceived as unsurrmountable barriers. The difference between .64 and .28 may be less than the time it takes to batt an eyelash. This new record may very well last for a decade. Who knows. Swimming in his own backyard with cheers from the home crowd might have given him the extra umph to perform the swim of a lifetime. 21.64 Alexander Popov RUS Moscow 6/1/2000 21.56 Eamon Sullivan AUS Sopac 2/17/2008 21.50 Alain Bernard FRA Eindhoven 3/23/2008 21.41 Eamon Sullivan AUS Sydney 3/27/2008 21.28 Eamon Sullivan AUS Sydney 3/28/2008
  • What are the following: SDK??? EDF??? SDK == streamline dolphin kick Not sure about EDF. Maybe EVF was meant (early vertical forearm). Skip
  • I SDK  on starts, but are you "supposed" to SDK off every wall? Or just for sprints? I've come to the conclusion that the less actual swimming I do when swimming, the better it is for me. In preparation for my 10k postal swim last year I focused a lot on my "wall work", in particular, using a couple SDKs to get past the flags on every push off. I think that did two things. One, it probably reduced my stroke count by one or two strokes per 50m. Two, it probably shifted a little of the workload from my arms to my legs, helping me keep my stroke together better. Whatever the ultimate reasons, I can't argue with the results. In 2005 (age 51) I swam 3:21:27.84. In 2007 (age 53) I swam 3:13:37.68. Those aren't spectacular times overall, but I was very pleased with the time drop. Skip
  • He has had three hip operations, ankle surgery, a succession of shoulder injuries Obviously, he had his body altered to allow for more efficient kicking (ankles/hip) and arm stroke (shoulders). (In all seriousness, this was inspired by a volleyball book by Karch Kiraly, where he mentions injuring one of his elbows as a kid. It allowed him to hyperextend his arm, which improved the angle of his forearms when bumping. To his credit, he didn't recommend breaking your elbow to try to gain the same benefit.)

Apparently GH Jr. is so flabbergasted he can't even remember Sullivan's actual time. He wrote 22.2 about three times in that post when he actually went 21.2! Several times in that initial post he talks about the difficulty in breaking 22, so it was an honest mistake. What are the following: SDK??? EDF??? I know that PED = performance enhancing drugs, but these 2 I can't figure out. And ladies and gentlemen... I am pretty much certain that some of the previous WR holders were also juiced. I swam w/ a couple of guys who began juicing after going on recruiting trips to schools w/ record-holders, and they said that they talked about PEDs w/ elite swimmers during their trips. Just saying... I don't think our sport's 100% clean, not w/ money out there to be made.

SDK == streamline dolphin kick Not sure about EDF. Maybe EVF was meant (early vertical forearm). Skip EDF == Early Diagonal Forearm This recognizes that the forearm is not necessarily vertical - the important thing is the forearm be perpendicular to the direction of travel, it doesn't matter what orientation it has within that plane.

SDK == streamline dolphin kick Thread-jack here... I SDK  on starts, but are you "supposed" to SDK off every wall? Or just for sprints? More importantly, is it ok to use this nominative (noun) as a verb, like the upper class on the east coast w/ the noun-now-verb "summer"? :joker:

I applaud Gary Hall Jr. for having the brass and the knowledge to raise questions that we tend to shy away from. I also remember the bashing Shirley Babashoff got when she openly spoke out against the East German cheaters. Surly Shirley is the title they hung around her neck and she was dead on target. She was also robbed of her rightful place in history by a bunch of cheating no good lousy thieves. Hall raises a very, very interesting question with respect to the “probability” of both Eamon and his girl friend having the same outrageous drops in time, both rapidly jumping to the head of the swimming world from a good way back in the pack and one of them did so with multiple injuries. Possible---Yes! Plausible? Believable? Not to me! There are enough reasons, history and facts that exist to warrant Hall’s and others skepticism regarding these swims. The same can be said----ahh---no---shouted about Dara’s comeback. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but we still have the right to have serious doubts about their innocents. I for one am going to be the biggest “I told you so” if any of these swimmers is ever caught.
