Dara just one the national title in the 100M Freestyle in 54.4 at the ripe old age of 40. Simply Incredible. :applaud: :woot:
If that's not inspiring I don't know what is.
Wow, I go run a conference swim meet and go to musical practice afterwards and come back and this thing keeps going, and going, and going.
The weight training in the 70's probably depended where you went to school. I went to a small rural HS that football was king, and women's sports were a sidenote. The women's track coach was a big believer of weight training and fought to get us in to weight train twice a week in the boys lockerroom. Twas a smelly place, but even back then I loved the weight training. I was one of the few girls who took it seriously though, the rest just goofed off.
I still cannot get over the difference in the bodies of the 70's video, and I bet you would see differences in the men as well.
Perhaps it was my statement about my being a mother and what I would want my son's wife to be doing. Sorry, but what mother would like it if her son's wife left him with their child for a month?
Probably was that part of it yes, We all want the best for our kids but in the end it's their choice. If he marries a femjock then it's part of the deal. If he marries a Vegas Showgirl...late nights and skimpy outfits are part of the deal.
People do not suddenly change to suit a new wife or husband, patterns of behaviour be it work or leisure are part of the person that an individual falls for. It's no fair to expect someone to drop that to suit in-laws or or what not.
Sounds like I'm lecturing but don't intend to come off that way. Just illustrating using your point. I don't think you're expecting your son to marry a girl and then have her drop everything for your tastes, just stating that you don't want to see him upset over it--if this case was about his relationship.
From 1992 (in her mid 20s) .... to 2000 .... to now.
Good pictures John. I don't know, if they're conclusive, in my opinion. It does look like she's added a bit of bulk and definition. I'm not overly convinced due to relaxed poses versus hands aloft poses right after a race (muscles engorged) but she has burned fat. I don't quite see bodybuilder type abs there in the later ones.
I'll just stick with my original thoughts. Something extraordinary is happening in terms of Dara and her latest success. I'd just like to leave the door open for the possibilty that it's all on the level, but I can understand folks looking twice.
OK this belong's on a Jonathan Miller thread someplace :p
Good one... :)
I've said for years, though, that Dave is my swimming hero. And it really is a cool poster. Take a look below.
To take the photo, the photographer laid on his stomach on the 3-meter diving board and aimed the camera straight down toward the water. Dave pushed off on his back in a streamlined position.
I went to HS in the 70's, the weights were in the boys lockerroom at our school. Weight training was discouraged for women. I think weight training has made a big difference.
Dara swam in college in the late 1980s. The weight and training program at Florida under Randy was more than just recently established by then.
I believe both points are valid here. I swam at the same time as Dara. Women did do weight training. But, even in the late 80's at Cal, we women had to train on the circuit machines in the early mornings because they were located in part of the men's locker room. I think we were doing so somewhat on the sly, actually. Our weight room was also a bit of an antiquated dungeon. I'm not sure all of the facilities at most Universities were as easily accessible or as high quality for the women athletes back then.
Swimstud,
I think you can make some basic generalizations from the 3 sets of photos.
In her mid 20's she did not have the definition she has now.
In her mid 20's she did not have the bulk and mass she had in 2000.
Her physique now is even much more "ripped" and trim than in 2000.
There are 3 different looks to her career.

I just realized I am 75, I have been around a long time. 25 years less then FINA, FINA has really messed things up. Crooked judges, suspending people who say they have never used drugs.
They say they are cleaning up sport, It seems to me sport is getting messier and messier.
That is a great picture actually. He looks like a super-hero!

Even if people drank a gallon of PED's every day, I DOUBT anyone could repeat Dara's accomplishments. Why? Because Dara has a gift, she is the greatest female sprint swimmer of all time.
See, now I am confused. I thought the argument was being made that her accomplishments were the product of innovative training, stretching, massage, dryland, and nutrition. Her breaks from the sport had actually helped her. Pregnancy had improved her athletic performance. Her ability to train full time without worrying about work or family was a huge advantage.
As I have said before, I believe that she is an anomaly. Or she is juiced.
