life time best times and best times in each age group

Hi usms swim friends, I'm working on a new swim faster faster article and I wanted to gather a little data first here's my questions: In your 2 or 3 best events what are your lifetime best times? how old were you when you swam them? what year was that? what are your best times in those events for each masters age group you've been in? here's an example of what I'm looking for Ande Rasmussen 50 scy free 1985 22 20.4 (25 - 29) 1991 28 20.5 (30 - 34) 1995 33 20.9 (35 - 39) can't find a time (40 - 44) 2004 40 22.44 thanks in advance to for participating in this I look forward to reading your replies Ande PS feel free to email them to me if you don't want to post them here AndeRasmussen@aol.com
  • Fortress: I LOVE that new avatar! Is that your youngest? 400 IM? I NEVER swam it as a kid. I was a die hard sprinter as a kid. Nothing over a 100. And I only swam 200s (and the 500 FR a couple of times) after some major kicking and screaming. I swam 400 IM once as an adult and by some fluke ended up w/a top 10 in the world masters. (Not many people must have swam it that year.) So, there's nothing to compare it to. Kristina: How'd your coach let you get away with that?!?! I swam the same events almost every meet: 100/200 back, 100/200fly, 200/400 IM, maybe 50/100 free if I was bored. Maybe breaststroke once a year during mid-season.(Never ever swam a 500 or 1650 though. Managed to escape that.) No itsy bitsy little 50s or 100 IMs when I grew up in the rough, tough days of AAU 1970's intensity. You lucked out. Glad you're trying the 400 IM now. Very brave. I would sooner drink poison. P.S. I'd take your 2:18 200 IM. I think that would easily land me in the Top 10 in my more elderly age group.
  • if you split the 400 IM correctly it's not so bad fly cruise it, save your legs, lots of air back stay in control, fast turns, save your legs, lots of air, feel great at the 200 *** stay long and smooth, work your turns and push offs feel good enough to do complete dolphin kick pull outs free work it and bring it home as fast as you can especially turn it on for the last 50, blast those legs and bring it home it's much better to swim it that way than to go "uh oh" I went out too hard and I've got another 200 to go Ande Kristina: How'd your coach let you get away with that?!?! • Hmmm....let's see what I can remember from my childhood. When I was a kid I hated swimming anything over a 100/200. Now I'm not crazy about swimming anything shorter than 500 free/400 IM. Even the mile in open water feels like a sprint these days! 100 Back SCY college-1998: 1:00 18-24: 1:08.16 25-19: 1:07.22 200 Back SCY college-1998: 2:10 18-24: 2:29.46 25-29: 2:20.43 Goal for 30-34: 2:10 400 IM SCY not sure about high school/college but I bet it was around 4:45ish Zones 2005: 5:21.14 Zones 2006: 5:04.78 Goal for 30-34: 4:45 And a little open water for fun... Chesapeake Bay 4.4 mile swim: 1990 (13 years old): 2:03 2000 (23 years old): 2:29 2001 (24 years old): 1:59 Goal for 2007: 1:45 or better
  • I'll only post times for my top three masters events that have a USA Swimming equivalent. I'm assuming you only want short course yards times. 100 *** PR: 1993 (age 19): 53.76 25-29 masters: 55.99 30-34 masters (so far): 56.11 100 back PR: 2004 masters (age 30) 50.94 25-29: 50.95 30-34 (so far): 50.94 200 IM PR: 1995 (age 21) 1:48.93 25-29: 1:52.69 30-34: 1:53.03
  • it's much better to swim it that way than to go "uh oh" I went out too hard and I've got another 200 to go Har, har. That's why it's better to only have a 50 to go. Someday, I may have to do this event just to piss you and Dave Barra off. Does anyone find it strange that Jeff is amazing at both *** and back? I thought those were almost mutually exclusive strokes ...
  • Har, har. Does anyone find it strange that Jeff is amazing at both *** and back? I thought those were almost mutually exclusive strokes ... No. We had this discusson last August and there is a swimmer like Jeff named David Lundberg. I provided the response of Jeff to another thread from last August. Originally posted by Frank Thompson The one guy I can think of that has always doubled up is David Lundberg. ... He was at the Worlds this year and swam both 50 *** and 50 Back plus 200 IM. Jeff Cummings response: I wanted to meet him. I saw him as he was warming down from his 50 *** and I was warming up (about 15 minutes between our swims). That's the last I remember seeing him, though if he swam the IM and 50 back, we might have bumped into each other. I hope to meet him soon to share our common oddity, and to meet someone I remember idolizing at a young age (and now find myself agonizing over his seemingly impossible short course records!).
  • Yes Jeff is amazing. As to mine,I'm listing only LCM as I don't have any SCM times before age 37 and I don't like SCY. I will say my best 100 SCY *** was done at age 32,not in college. I am also listing only breaststroke as it's all I can remember(or care about) 25-29 100 BR-1:14.05 200BR 2:48.08 30-34 50 BR-32.8 100 BR-1:13.88 200BR 2:45.05 35-39 50 BR-33.63 100 BR-1:14.65 200 BR 2:45.25 40-44 50 BR-33.53 100BR-1:14.85 200 BR-2:47.02 45-49 50 BR-33.28 100 BR-1:15.33 200 BR-2:49.64 50-54 50 BR-33.85 100 BR-1:17.09 200BR-2:52.07 55-59 50 BR-34:66 100BR-1:17.08 200 BR-2:52.11 As you can see I think I should be able to drop my 50 time.

Good thing I haven't slowed down. I'm a whole .1 faster than I was at 12. Oddly, I'm still ranked about the same now as I was then. Not sure what that says. Kristina: Where's that 400 IM? Cruise: Where exactly are those breaststroke times? Surely, there is someone besides Jim doing breaststroke? I seem to recall a lot of loud pontificating and defending of honor from various breaststrokers... So far, we've mostly heard from a lot of sprinters. Fortress: I LOVE that new avatar!
