Back in the pool

Well, it's that time. End of another year spent overweight and out of shape. I'm done with this body. Time to go back into the pool. This time I will stick with it. Gonna follow the "zero-to-1 mile in 6 weeks" plan and go from there. Hard to believe I was an "A" swimmer circa 1983. :D Wish me luck....

I like it... the Mile High Club. :) After that first workout, my triceps and back were SORE. In all the previous times when I got back in the pool after a hiatus, I was never this sore. I'm sure that's because I was resting far too long between sets. The 0 to 1650 plan only has me resting for a few breaths, which is good. It forces me to work harder. This morning went a little better. I can already tell my strength has improved. My new dilemma... a new suit. I wear these nylon gym shorts with mesh pockets and they are kind of baggy. I haven't worn a real swim suit in ages. Anybody recommend something for a big guy? I wouldn't exactly look real good in lycra right now. :D But, the shorts I wear give me a lot of drag, which I suppose is good for me but I don't want too much drag preventing me from reaching my goals. get yourself a pair of jammers wear them under the baggy ones (if your self conscious) and ditch the baggy ones just as you're about to get in the pool. I doubt anyone is looking and if they are once you're in the water it's irrelevant.

The only folks there at this time of the morning are the masters people and they are all really nice.

If I worried what people thought of my little old thread bare Speedo which shows more of my backside than should be shown, I would wear the one of three swim suits my wife bought the other day. Now that would really shame me boxer type shorts to swim in???? not me.
  • I also just started up again after 13 years off. Feels great. My main goal is to drop 40-50 lbs. and get back under 200. good thing is I can get to the pool 5-6 time per week for an hour. I used teh 0-1 mile as a guide and came up with this. 200 warmup 4x100 10-15 breaths 100 *** 4x75 7-10 breaths 100 *** 4x50 5 breaths 100 *** 200 cool down total 1600 this takes about 45-50 minutes for me to complete anyway nice to see so many are just starting. I'm trying to figure out how early I'll have to get up. Thanks!

It has taken me about 25 - 30 minutes or so. Oh that's not bad at all. I am really bad at tracking my yardage, so I have no idea how much I'm doing right now - so no way to know how far I get in an hour. I have a lap counter on the way though.

Yeah I'm only doing 700 yards per session in this first week.

I have suffered with severe acne over the last number of years and now have acne scars on my back. I used to be a keen swimmer but for the last 6 years haven't been near a pool as am too embarrassed to be seen without my top. I know most indoor pools frown on the wearing of T-shirts etc...but does anyone have any advice....have recently got a proplapsed disc in my lower back so would love to get into the pool again... Any suggestions?......would be much appreciated!

If you are really concerned about it you might want to see a dermatologist and/or a plastic surgeon. I can understand your apprehension but I would also attempt to convince you that nobody at the pool is likely to care. I am generally not a fan of plastic surgery but if the scars are preventing you from doing something that would be healthy for you both physically and mentally, I would probably be more inclined to suggest it.
