Showed up for 5:30am swim practice and sign said 'Pool Closed'. Pool was closed due to lightning.....except pool is indoors! Yes the roof is retractable.....but we have to BEG to get it open. Why do they have to close pool if pool is indoors????? :frustrated:
Fortunately mine was during warmup and my turn was relatively slow so there was not a lot of force going through the turn...but it still got my attention. Walking on it smarts a bit but seemingly less and less as the evening wears on. I blame the whole thing on having water polo players practicing in the pool. Well, that or the new suit I was wearing (see the swimsuit trends thread).

I was turning slow too (nothing unusual there though) but I had company in the lane and I was worrying about a crash and tried to stay near the rope but not get tangled...too many last minute adjustments and *dong* I clanged 'em good. Thankfully it was on the outdoor pool with aluminium not the indoor ceramic tiles!

Because lightning can travel through metal pipes. See the attached article from the Journal of Athletic Training (http://www.nata.org/).

Rob- CONGRATULATIONS! So exciting :groovy: :woot:  (I'm getting all weepy thinking how proud you must be)
Alas, at the other end of the swimming spectrum- Brenna was behind the blocks not once, but twice, and "chickened" out. I don't know if that's really the right phrase with a 4 year old... oh, well maybe next year. On a different note, that next day, in our backyard she dove! and then was diving for diving sticks and wearing goggles. What's the saying? When a door closes, a window's open somewhere!!!
I'm still proud of her because she can swim free and back really well :agree:
My Mom told me about how I once took 4 minutes to dive in for a 25 freestyle.
Age groupers still ask me if my Swedish goggles hurt because they don't have padding or if they fall off. I wouldn't wear them if they fell off.
Ah, Stud I can feel your pain. I took a turn at a Cdn Nats SCM 50 free too close to the wall and my heels hit the top of the bulkhead. Everyone had to rush and tell me after the race what a truly magnificent booming noise it made...
Triathlons
I think triathlons should be equally balanced by time,
in the Austin Triathlon
you'll notice Brandon Marsh spent
19:25 on the swim,
59:18 on the bike,
34:45 on the run
the distances in the swim bike and run should be set so elite triathletes spend around the SAME amount of time on each one.
round up brandon's times (exclude transitions)
here's how much time he spent on each discipline
20 / 60 / 35
he spent ___ of his race time on ____
17.4% of time on swim
52.2% of time on bike
30.4% of time on run
So the bike distance should be shortened,
the run should be slightly lengthened and
the swim should be significantly lengthened to equalize each event.
it's obvious triathlons have a thinly veiled conspiracy lead by cyclists.
End the injustice, shorten the bike courses and lengthen the swims.
Also what's with allowing neoprene wetsuits,
those things float like corks
Poor swimmers must gain 4 - 6 seconds a 100
Couldn't agree more. It must be a conspiracy to keep masters swimmers out of triathlons. Of course, it would be better just to eliminate the bike portion altogether.
I have heard of equalizer triathlons where each sport is theoretically supposed to take a participant roughly the same amount of time. For me that would mean a 5K swim, a 20 mile bike and a 200 yard run.

Donna - I got rid of my membership to Bally's. Pool maint wasn't up to par both with chemicals and also temps. I have a LA Fitness membership if you are in FtW - 25 yards, about 84F, pool a little more consistent. Temps are a little warm but at least no surprises since January. You should also be able to get a 1 or 2-week guest pass.
