Warren,
Your Local Masters Swimming Committee (LMSC) chair will be able to help you form a club. Most of the commonwealth of Virginia is within the Virginia LMSC, check out www.usms.org/.../lmscofficers.php for contact information or look at the Virginia website http://www.vaswim.org/
warren,
what part of VA are you located in? i saw in a different thread that you were thinking of swimming in the Terrapin Cup in july- does this mean you're in northern VA?
USMS also has a helpful guide called "Building a Successful Masters Swim Club" available online at:
www.usms.org/.../building.pdf
I used an earlier version of this guide to create a club at the Peddie School in New Jersey in 1994. I did everything the guide suggested - followed it like a checklist. Within a year, we had 100 registered swimmers.

There are workout groups at the NOVA pool and at Briarwood (in Midlothian; I'm not sure of the official name now). Most of these swimmers represent Virginia Masters Swim Team. There is also a new team, Swim Quest. I'll send you contacts if you email me at
durrant6@cox.net
At nationals this weekend, there were a number of Richmond swimmers participating.
Betsy Durrant, VMST President
Note: the guide provides a really good basic framework for building a Masters group, but some of the details have changed since the last revision.
In the guide, it says you will get SWIM magazine when you register. It should now say SWIMMER magazine. Also, most of the contact information in the last appendix has changed. If you need contact information, check the "Administration" section of this web site for the latest, or contact the USMS National Office at usms@usms.org.

I live in Richmond VA. There arnt any masters teams around here that have a main focus of preparing swimmers for meets. My local Y (tuckahoe ymca) has a masters team but they arnt about swimming meets, their more for fitness and I dont think they are an actual usms club. I want to swim for a club that focuses on meets and that has sent people to nationals. But theres no clubs around here like that.
Hi Warren. I live in Richmond too. We have a very active Masters workout group at ACAC (formerly Briarwood) in Midlothian. The group has 11 workouts per week, usually with 15-30 swimmers, and excellent coaching. Many of the swimmers compete in meets and triathlons. In fact, the four swimmers from this workout group who just came back from Short Course Nationals all had top ten finishes. Feel free to e-mail me at ppowis@aol.com for more information.
