2006 Short Course National Championships

2006 Short Course National Championships is happening at the City of Coral Springs Aquatic Complex in Coral Springs, Florida, on May 11-14, 2006 RESULTS by sex and age group www.usms.org/.../ by event: with 50 splits calculated for you www.usms.org/.../ here's the where you can see the psyche sheet www.usms.org/.../ www.usms.org/.../ figured I'd start a thread where we could talk about the meet anyone have any comments?
  • Bump for the imminent start of the meet. Good luck everyone! I'll definitely be following the real-time results...and probably get jealous I'm not there.
  • he also split the 100 very well 23.15 24.56 47.71 24.56 - 23.15 = 1.41 the rest of the 1,000 was just a swim down but he had to complete the race for his 100 time to count ande PS I also added the results like above and here to make results super easy to find RESULTS www.usms.org/.../ Originally posted by gull80 Did you notice that he split 47.71 for the first 100? The next 50 was a 39 (a recovery swim), then fairly even splitting the rest of the way (33s and 34s). That time would likely be fast enough to win the 100 (which he did not enter) on Sunday. I wonder if he did an open turn.
  • Blistering swim by Ethan Saulnier, 36, of NEM in the 1000 free with a 9:34.14. That's movin'! Just a little off the Nat. record of 9:31.89. Jim McConica moved up to the 55-59 age group and battered the previous record of 10:39.9 with his 10:07.36 swim. No big shock here, though. All those extra red blood cells didn't help our own (Evil) Paul Smith who struggled a little and finished at 11:00, well off his seed time of 10:40. I'm not counting him out for the rest of the meet yet. We all know the 1000 is a novelty event for him :D
  • Originally posted by gull80 Did you notice that he split 47.71 for the first 100? No, I missed that. That explains a lot. Now I see he isn't entered in the 100 free which is late Sunday. Damn, just when I was starting to think one of the Smiths was actually human. ;)

  • I'm noticing several events with less than 10 people in some age groups. For next year's qualifying times, don't they use the 10th place + 10%? Does anyone know what happens if there aren't 10, does it go back 2 years? Almost makes me wish I had gone, I may have placed in the 200 ***.

Thanks for the information Craig and Kirk. Good to know.
  • I'm new to this competition stuff, please help me understand what's going on here. Assuming that Paul's 100 split is as fast or faster than say the top 5 in the 100 in his age group, does he get ranked for the 100? Or does he just get a mention and bragging rights? Do you have to do an open turn at the 100 mark to "finish," or will the split count off a flip? Why would he do it this way? Schedule conflict with the 100, avoiding back to back events, clear water out front of the 1000 swimmers, other reasons, all of the above? Thanks.
  • It would be awfully tough for a swimmer of Tall Paul's stature (Ha!) to get away with sandbagging in the 100. But he doesn't strike me as a sandbagger anyway, so I doubt clear water has anything to do with it.

That much is true, but splits count for records, top ten rankings, etc. if you get the proper documentation submitted (split form). The 100 free is fairly late Sunday. Turns out attendance isn't huge for the meet, so Paul probably could have still gotten a late flight out on Sunday, but that's hard to know when you're filling out your entry. I know I've skipped late events I wanted to swim in the past because of this. It's difficult to justify another hotel night, meals, a missed day of work and being away from your family (if they aren't with you) just to get in that last event. On the other hand, these late events can work in your favor. You can pretty much guarantee you'll place just a little higher in that final event because many people have already left :)
