Do you have to do an open turn at the 100 mark to "finish," or will the split count off a flip? Why would he do it this way? Schedule conflict with the 100, avoiding back to back events, clear water out front of the 1000 swimmers, other reasons, all of the above? Thanks. I was wondering the same thing. My initial response is that you can't win an event that you don't sign up for. As far as swimming ahead of the 1000 swimmers, could he not just sandbag and give a slower seed time in his entry?

I would bet he can't hang around Sunday for the 100 and swam it like a time trial. His time will count for top ten rankings for the year and would have counted as a record (had he broken the existing one of 47.54). The split would have been recorded whether he flipped or did an open turn (but in most cases would be faster with an open turn). I believe he did something similar a few years ago at long course Nats.
  • Speaking of 200 ***, I saw G. Marshall go out in a 55.6 and finnish in a 1:58 smashing the record as a 24 year old. It's a fun meet, although you have to do some stair climbing to hit the beer garden :)
  • The real time search is generally great, but what happened to the men's 50 BR? Events after it are posted but it's nowhere to be found as of 1:30 EDT.

Great facilities, tremendous organizing committee an extremely well run meet and as always an unbelievable opportunity to get with some of the nicest people, swimmers. And the weather, while a bit warm, was great.

  • After wrongly accusing Paul Smith of being mortal earlier in this thread, I'd like to be the first to congratulate him. Some mighty impressive swimming! Heck, congrats to everyone who swam. All hail, Tall Paul! originally posted by Peter Cruise The 45 - 49 year agegroup national records took a real pounding at Nationals this year!!....not just from Tall Paul either....although Paul broke 4 of them, Caly Britt broke 4 of them as well....and Jon Blank broke 3 of them too I believe? Paul wasn't that far off from breaking both the 100 free record and the 500 free record as well (of course the 100 free was his first 100 split of his 1000 free and so doesn't appear in the 100 free final results).....But I guess overall, I give Pablo the MVP award in that agegroup IMO for diversification since he won so many different kinds of events. Paul is not human!!.....He must be one of those L. Ron Hubbard style Super Aliens that came from a world completely covered in water....somehow he was then transported to earth to live amongst us humans in preparation for some kind of alien invasion.....but thats just my theory of course. never before in my life have i seen more good looking people wearing next to nothing in one place, at one time. if that doesn't inspire me to swim harder, better, faster... nothing will. and a word to Dara Torres : it's illegal to show up 4 weeks after giving birth with that flat stomach.
