That much is true, but splits count for records, top ten rankings, etc. if you get the proper documentation submitted (split form).
The 100 free is fairly late Sunday. Turns out attendance isn't huge for the meet, so Paul probably could have still gotten a late flight out on Sunday, but that's hard to know when you're filling out your entry. I know I've skipped late events I wanted to swim in the past because of this. It's difficult to justify another hotel night, meals, a missed day of work and being away from your family (if they aren't with you) just to get in that last event.
On the other hand, these late events can work in your favor. You can pretty much guarantee you'll place just a little higher in that final event because many people have already left :)
