I am slow, and when I mean slow, I mean slow. I can do a 26 sec 50 with fins, but without I come in just under 1:20! I think a big part of it is just taking the fins off and doing a lot of kick sets to learn to feel the water better with my feet. I have a good breaststroke kick so I don't think my problem is an overly weak pair of legs, although they could be in better shape. Also, myankles are fairly flexible as I can point my toes and make my feet bend backwards past an even position with my shins. However, I do think that I need to loosen up my ankles when I kick. I feel like I get more out of my kick for those brief moments when I allow my ankles to snap back and forth with my kick. I think I actually need to relax more to kick faster as weird as that sounds.
I suppose the answer to my question is that I simply need to take of the fins and do kick set after kick set until I learn to feel the water better with my feet and become more efficient.

Check out Nystrand's kick in the 50free next to Bernard in Mazzy's underwater video:

That is a very strange looking kick for sure. Did I see an almost dolphin kick?
I have been doing a double kick every once and a while. I kick both legs at the same time while doing a six beat kick. My third kick with my left leg is a kick down with the left leg and right leg both kicking down at the same time.
That kick looks awefull. He is obviously fast but he looks bad on top of the water and underneath. I like bernard's. his body is much more aligned and making a tighter hole. It is more pleasing to watch.
I was having a bit of a recovery/drill workout today, but decided to do some flutter kicking at the end of my workout for sh*ts and giggles. Hmmm.... I'm not so good.
Baseline test sets: (from a push, no underwater pushes etc., with a board, can't be too precise because there was only a pace clock)
25 yards: 16
50 EZ
50 yards: 37.5 ish
50 EZ
50 yards with fins for fun: :25
100 EZ
I was a little freaked out that I was so much faster with fins, so I did another 50 without, :38.5 ish (tired)
Good thing I rarely do more than a 50 free. Dolphin kicking is so much more fun.
nice 25 and 50
you're a speedy kicker
looks like you got tired
maybe take more rest next time

I know George thinks propulsion is all arms, but I'm thinking I do pretty well with the legs and core. If my shoulders were better, I'd be bench pressing my own weight like you. I probably could still, but I'm scared to do bench press and dips.
I almost never do any flutter kick in practice. I guess I should do more. I should really time my SDKs for your other thread.
I have seen the results of too much concentration on the legs. This guy used to kick 2000 meters a day. I think he over did the kicking thing.
www.youtube.com/watch I don't even like his walking gait. He is however very good on a stationary bike.
keep training you will get faster
congratulations

THANK YOU ANDE!
You are right on needing to learn how to kick and SDK.
I've been kicking and doing kick sets with and without a board.
Went from
1:00.3 to 58.5 in the 100 fly (in literally a few months);
55.19 to 54.5 (in 1 month);
1:59 in the 200 free (best as a 17 year old was 2:02.8).
I'm still a slow kicker but at least I am swimming more w/ my legs. You are so right on with your advice. I am not worthy of your advice. :bow::bow:
Next I'm focusing on becoming a fast kicker. Pigs may fly first, but I'm working on it.
