Unfortunately, I am much better at doling out workout advice than actually implementing it. I swim by myself 3-4 days a week for an hour (about 3,000) and rarely put the pedal to the metal unless some one like Paul is in the pool next to me. Actually I typically do the same workout every day. Hence, I too suffer from lack of speed and struggle to "wake up" in the coming weeks before Masters Nationals. You need to ask Rich Abrahams about speed during masters workouts. He's actualy an authority that follows his own advice. John Smith

  • Patrick, check out www.trainright.com. Also check out some of the books he has written about training Armstrong, great info that can be applied to swimming. Matt, in a "normal" year you'd be right however since I had shoulder surgery in October training has had to be adapted to a shorter cycle. Also, its a bit of a challenge to go into nationals in May and be able to come back for worlds at 100%. Hence the discussions of late about how some of the top USS swimmers are training in a way that focuses more on quality work that enables them to swim fast a multiple meets. Problem is, old farts like John and I still train/taper "old school" and need at least two weeks taper!

Paul, You are transitioning from aerobic base work to quality for what meet? I'm assuming SCY Nationals, but it seems a little late. Matt
