Ande,
Richard Abrahams is amazing. I wonder how much training he does. He must have been reading your faster faster writings. :)
I noticed under the men's 100 free results a swimmer from the past,...with an infamous achievement.
Is that the Jim Montgomery who was the first man ever under 50 seconds for the LCM 100 meter free? His age would seem about right. It was the '76 Olympiad.

Actually, no. Yes, I swam faster than that in college, but I was never able to break 1:50 in high school. I was really a distance swimmer in those days and didn't have enough speed for a good 200 free. I'm pretty happy to swim faster at 35 than in high school and I know I can swim even faster!
BTW, Bobby Hackett was an amazing distance swimmer. I read the book Four Champions, One Gold Medal last year. Great read, especially to hear how those guys trained!
Jim Montgomery was a fantastic swimmer. That's great that he's still at it. The captain of my high school squad (Bobby Hackett) was on the USA team with Jim, but "threw in the towel" after he graduated from Harvard.
One a side note,... great swimming Kirk. For only three years back that's quite impressive. You must have had a strong 200 free in your younger years. That record is all yours.

Thanks for the tip on the book. I'll have to pick up a copy. Being a distance swimmer, I'm sure you could appreciate it when a coach says something about a long set of 100's with a one minute interval. Thankfully, that was pretty much for Hackett only.
I see that Brian Goodell is back in the pool again. I'm sure that he's in it for the fun though. After all the mileage these guys put in, it's no wonder that some of them developed an aversion to chlorinated water.

yes, Val, that was THE Jim Montgomery
I admit it....I'm one the guilty parties of fading out at the end of my 200 (I'm the one that went 1:58.07 on Ande's posted list). I don't think that I went out too hard in the first 100, but I made my push too early in that third 50, and (obviously) fell apart on the last 25.
Definitely could have been swam smarter, but it's a 4 second drop from last month....I'll take it :)
I'm really happy with how I swam at Nationals. Since starting Masters three years ago I've gone to all three SC Nationals and have dropped time every year in every event. I'm not sure how long I can continue to do that, but I'm certainly going to do my best to keep the downward trend going!
Here were my splits in the 200 free:
26.29 54.16 1:22.16 1:50.18
So a 54.16 then a 56.02.
