Metatarsal Stress Fracture

I planned to swim at Nationals this year in Fort Lauderdale but was just diagnosed with a metatarsal stress fracture in my right foot... I still want to swim and try not to put much pressure on my right foot. Does anyone have experience competing with this type of injury? Also, this is typically a runner's injury and I have not run at all since last summer. Can this be caused from just pushing off the wall repeatedly?

there are different types of stress fracutres. If you have a type one or two stress fracture you can continue with your swimming as usual and you will feel only little discomfort when pushing off the walls. If you have any other type of stress fracture then you shouldn't do any swimming at all cause it could slow down the healing process, but your doctor would have tell you. also primary a runner's injury you can have a stress fracture also when while doing other things when these put a unsual stress on your foot / ankle / calf. you could have suffered your stress fracture while pushing off when you just push with a part of your foot (e.g. just with the part right under your toes -sorry, can't find the word). but it's rather unlikely as you should have performed a LOT of incorrect push offs until it will result in a stress injury.

Thanks for the reply. Doctor did not mention Type I or II.. just said- 6 weeks to heal. Once I'm back in the water (soon, I hope) I'll have to check out my turns and see if I can change the way I hit the wall. Thanks again for the information.

if your doctor said it will take 6 weeks to heal it's probably type I. If it was any other type it would take a) longer to heal b) your doctor would have told you no sports, not even swimming and c) sometimes you have to undergo surgery.

In 1958 I had a green fracture in my ankle, two days before the 1958 Commonwealth games (I had stepped in a pot hole). They injected me with novocaine and wrapped my ankle with a bandage for support. I had also twisted my knee it had swollen like a balloon, they wrapped it also. I swam the 110 yards free, the medley relay, the 880 fr relay, no problem just a little slower than normal. It took about six weeks to heal. George
