Steroids

I was offered a presciption for steroids in 1952. I went to the library and found out what they were and I told my doctor no. I knew all kinds of athletes who took them I don't think any one really benefitted from their use. George Park

I've no doubt that the side effects are less at lower doses. The performance enhancing benefits will be less as well. We seem to be losing sight of the fact that these are controlled substances and are being obtained illegally.

Just read an article that there is no such thing as a small dose of anablic steroids.

I can find an article that will say just about anything. People are given theraputic doses of steriods everyday. Steroids have many theraputic purposes and can be administered at doses which have little to no risk of serious adverse events. They do have contraindications, and should always be taken under the care of a physician, but steriods are not a substance which will cause you to morph into a mongoloid from taking a 1 CC shot. That is just ridiculous. I can also find an article that says that there is no safe dose of ephedra. There is absolutely no credible evidence that theraputic doses of ephedra causes serious adverse events, yet the FDA and other junk scienteists more than willingly make giant leaps of faith to conclude otherwise. Having said all of that, steroids can cause serious problems when abused and taken in doses above therapuetic ranges and for overly long periods of time. Moreover, steroid abuse destroys the very nature of any sport and should not be condoned in any way in any sport. Steroids have their place in medicine, but have absolutely no place in sports. Hey If we read anything and believe it, you would not eat anything, drink anything, touch anything, see anything, or hear anything. We had an old saying DON'T BELIEVE ANYTHING YOU READ & HALF OF WHAT YOU SEE!!

Too true. I work a lot with medical science, and get a bit frustrated at times, with our society's (even many doctors) willingness to accept junk science as fact. Don't even get me started on the media. No one want to think for themselves anymore because are too busy trying to make a buck or amusing ourselves. Unfortunately, it seems that science education is going backwards while technology continues to move forward and suck up more and more of our time to actually enjoy life and actually hone our critical thinking skills. Getting off of my soap box, now. BTW, I am really sore from my workout this morning. Hook'em Blue

Frequently, I think many peole will hear somehting and not be able to distinguish it from actual fact, hearsey or misunderstand what is being said. this is extremely important when kids who haven't had a grounded education in biology believe that they can take a very small dose of an anabolic steroid & it is no different thatn taking prednisone.

So did anyone besides me think that it was terrible that a guy who was suspended from professional tennis for (I think) nine months for using steroids almost won the French Open. Puerta has been caught with steroids in his system more than once. He never even contested the last tiem he was caught. How should people who are repeatedly caught using be treated?

How should people who are repeatedly caught using be treated? They should be given a lifetime BAN...NEXT!

If you bring an unopened jar containing a nutritional supplement made by company X to a laboratory, have it tested, and find that it contains illegal substance Y, which isn't on the label as one of the ingredients, I think you'd have grounds for legal action against company X (particularly if you were an athlete who got suspended from your sport because ingredient Y turned up in a blood test). It's a good idea to only buy nutritional supplements that are manufactured according to pharmaceutical standards.

I say a notice on either Cnnor EsSPN that he was suing th ecompany. I think he might have purchased the supplement at a national chain store (I'm not sure so I'm not going to list it hear). Has any one heard anything about the swimmers involved with BALCO? I know at least one was called before hte Grand Jury investigating the company.
