I was offered a presciption for steroids in 1952. I went to the library and found out what they were and I told my doctor no.
I knew all kinds of athletes who took them I don't think any one really benefitted from their use.

Also, they guy who just got reinstated in swimmign. Said that he was taking a nutritional supplement that didn't have any labeling about steroids. He had it tested & it turned up positive. He really didn't know becasue the list of ingredients didn't list what they found, as I understand the case. It was somewhere inthe norhteast, I believe.
john if you'd gotten on a great doping program in your prime, it might have been the boost you needed to make the 84 and 88 olympic teams for the 200 free

did anyone see the bit about Vencill on, I think ESPN, htis morning? It ws rather good & looked at the question really well. The medical expert talked about the pressure to try steroids on people. I guess I always knew that I wasn't going to be the best no matter what!
I've often wondered about the number of athletes in East Germany (for example) who had been trial runs for determining dosages for anabolic steroids before the top athletes received the drugs. Those numbers would be interesting.
How odd this is reappearing now. I have a friend who is getting anabolic steroids from his doctor to correct some sideeffects from his meds for Ulcerative Colitis. The guy has always beena weight lifter. Ihad UC before and you can lose a lot of weight during a flare up. He has to go to the docs office to get the shot. He is really afaraid of the side effects. Does anyone else know of a medical reason to take steroids besides ones like prednisone?
Anabolic steroids are prescribed for:
*adolescent males who are unable to produce sufficient amounts of testosterone due to pituitary malfunctions
*men who cannot produce testosterone because of the loss of their testes
*some patients with decreased muscle mass due to cancer and/or surgery
