Where can I get some advice on breathing in free style? I am still taking lessons, starting this Wednesday I start the intermediate lessons. I went to the pool yesterday, 25-yard lanes. I do not run out of power, or energy, I run out of breath. I cannot seem to get in enough air... any recommendations. I use nose plugs... Since I seem to get a lot of water in my nose...
  • keep showing up for practice do the best you can when you're there you'll improve I'd probably not use a nose plug when you're swimming don't breathe in through your nose but you can exhale through your nose ande Originally posted by lexington476 Where can I get some advice on breathing in free style? Make sure you are exhaling under water before turning your head to breathe. This is a common mistake for new swimmers. If you don't exhale completely, you can't get a full lung of fresh air.

Learn to breathe in the water when not swimming by doing rhythmic breathing excercises. It will make it easier to breathe when you are swimming.
  • The more comfortable you get in the water the easier the breathing will be. Did I read you are a runner too somewhere? While running you can breathe seemingly anytime. While swimming though you really have to think about when to breathe so it doesn't interfere with what the rest of your body is doing. It's a timing thing. It just take practice. Try to learn to breathe to both sides, this will help you be balanced in your freestyle.
