www.swiminfo.com/.../8902.asp www.goswim.tv/articles_comments.php I figured for sure that somebody would have posted about him. Anyhow, it is a pretty sad set of circumstances for this poor guy. He has his whole life ahead of him, with or without swimming, and now because of a snowboarding accident he may never walk or kick again.

I AGREE! I went snowskiing one time....it is not for me. Being cold, wet, hurt and sore is not my idea of fun. Someone fell right in front of me. Being a beginner, and not a very good skier I might add, I fell on top of them! In the meantime, a skier coming down the advanced slope, which for some reason joins the intermediate slope, fell into us at a VERY high speed. His ski hit me in the thigh and left a bruise the size of a football. I haven't been since then! It is the ONLY sport I don't like! WAY too dangerous!
  • Best wishes to Dave. Actually from what I've read it was a sledding accident, not snowboarding. Yes, skiing and snowboarding both have their share of injuries, but they're worth it, IMO. I ski personally. The thrill, the beauty of the surroundings, etc. Nothing else can compare.
  • According to swiminfo, Dave's mother is asking for prayer for her son. He has a 50/50 chance to walk again!! Everyone please say a prayer for Dave, his surgeon and his family and friends

Snowboarding is one of the most dangerous winter sports. I have a friend who is an emergency nurse in Colorado. He has told me that snowboarders have more serve injuries than do regular skiers.

I took about 40 kids skiing and snowboarding last weekend. There was a rule that only those that had been snowboarding for a year could do it on the trip. We still had multiple broken bones. The injury count was down from last year however. The Medic in the first aid cabin told us that snowboarders tend to injure their upper body and skiiers their lower body. Because snowboarders fall alot and try and catch themselves. I was going to try out snowboarding but after hearing all that I'll stick to the skis. Hell hath no fury like a swimmer that has been training for her state meet for months then breaks a bone and can't swim it. (I did survive 10 years of gymnastics with no broken bones, but a few stress fractures here and there). I hope he recovers and quickly!

I guess I will be the contrary opinion...... I have been skiing for 25 years. Only had one small injury - a slight tear of the meniscus in a knee (don't even remember for sure which knee it was anymore). It was about 8 years ago and I was skiing again in a week. Yes, their are risks associated with the sport - as there is with many things. But I get an incredible feeling of weightlessness when I ski. The risks are well worth the joy in my book. It's actually addicting..... kind of like another sport I know.:D

One of the things that has always impressed me about Dave is the willingness he has had to share his swimming knowledge with others. My first contact with him was a couple of years ago when he gave me some advice on my breaststroke on a message board (yes, for free!). It's really sad that something like this should have hit him, particularly during the prime years of his swimming career! But if we all pray, maybe something will happen! It sounds like it's best for swimmers to stay away from water when it's not liquid.
