nutrition drinks

I am looking for a suggestions on nutritional suppliments after my workouts. High carbo, High protein? I swim in the morning 3 days/wk, weights 2 days/wk. I eat a whole grain cereal before my workout. Does anyone suggest one of those protein or cabo drinks that are highly advertised, I never trust those adds. I was thinking some sort of protein supplement, but I don't need to bulk up my muscles, as I am a swimmer not a muscle head. I just want some sort of muscle recovery supplement. I go straight to work after my workouts, so I need something "on the go". Any suggestions?

Chocolate milk has the desired carb to protein ratio of 4:1, white milk doesn't. I've been using chocolate milk as a recovery drink for about a year now, it's cheap and works just fine. Google it, there's tons of info. on the topic.

There is a small study on Chocolate milk vs other recovery drinks, and CM did well. For post work out it seems that a lot of consensus is about a 4:1 carb to protein ratio within about 30 minutes of workout. Carb amount is about 1-2mg/kg. I haven't tried a lot of the recovery drinks, because frankly they get really expensive. I use a cup of CM and a cup of natural vanilla yogurt post workout, and then a clif bar (again, about 4:1, and some fiber too) about mid-morning. I throw a serving of protein supplement in too on my lifting days. Not sure it is necessary, but I don't think there is really a lot of good data on any of these regimens.

Been taking Accelerade prior and Endurox after for a week or so...seems to work, but it could of course just be my natural powers! Taste wise Orange Accelrade is ok--has a synthetic taste though--I make it a bit weaker. I like Endurox though I have fruit punch flavour...it's kind of yoghurty.
  • I initially ignored this thread, thinking I didn't take any energy drinks. But for some reason I opened it today, and saw the references to chocolate milk. Almost every day after I get to my office, I have one of the Shamrock Farms, "Cafe Mocha," milk drinks (individually packaged in a 12 fl oz bottle, about $0.75)....a closer look reveals it says, "Fortified for energy and alertness." The ingredients start with: lowfat milk, coffee, sugar, cocoa... These aren't readily available, they used to be found in most supermarkets, even the Super Wal-Mart and Target, but lately I have to be creative to find them (a local smaller grocery called Sprouts usually has them and I'll get like 8 when I see them). So I guess I am kind of taking an energy drink after all....
  • I got some Clif Electrolyte Crisp Apple with caffeine on closeout the other day. It's pretty tasty cold but starts tasting a bit like a road apple as it gets warmer. I heavily dilute my sports drinks so I'm probably not getting the full boost available.

  • This is quite possibly the best news I have ever received.

I tried Accelerade Saturday and it was foul! And what's worse, I did not feel any benefit from taking it. I biked and ran (indoors) and I had no extra energy during and felt just as tired afterward. J
  • This is quite possibly the best news I have ever received. Don't get too excited. I read the same thing in Triathlete magazine. But they warned that, if you are already a caffeine drinker, you will have developed a tolerance. Thus, the performance enhancing benefits will be less than for non-users. On the other hand, the article did say it was about the only legal drug that actually works.

I think that they changed the taste of Accelerade since I originally posted and I have to agree that I'm not wild about the taste. However, it still works well. My subjective ranking of the flavors: Orange (yucky), Lemon-lime (very yucky), fruit punch (vomit). Maybe they should make it in "raw pork fat" flavor - it couldn't be much worse than the fruit punch. Several things: 1) I have found that if I am swimming for 2 or more hours - racing or training - that mixing 3 scoops Accelerade and 1 part Gu tri-berry gel in 48 oz of water works better than Accelerade alone and it also tastes better (less sweet and it cuts the weird flavor). I've modestly dubbed this "Jansenade." 2) You can get Accelerade pre-mixed in the local grocery store - at least you can in my area. However, it is not the same formulation as the powder and I don't think it works as well, but it is better than anything else I've tried off the grocery shelf if you are stuck without the powder. 3) If you are adventurous, you can look up the patent for Accelerade on-line (You just need the patent #), figure out the ingredients/amounts and make your own for experimental purposes. (This is NOT illegal as long as you don't sell it.) I did this awhile back and it worked well, cost much less, but it was a pain getting some of the ingredients. Is this the only post today that didn't mention Chuck Norris? Oooops.... -LBJ
