I cannot help here, but others with breastroke training will:
I do freestyle;
I stay away from breastroke, exactly for the reason of this being a very technical stroke, inducing injuries when is not executed well.
One of the exercises I do when I have knee problems, is wear fins and do a butterfly kcik with the breaststroke pull. This actuall help you get a better streamline feel for your form also.
Hope this helps.
Breastroke doesn't give me any problems. I think I did fair in breastroke compared to backstroke is that the first team I was as a kid, I had a coach that emphasis the glide. For beginning breastrokers doing a glide frog kick until you get use to breastroke probably helps, then go to a whip kick. Backstroke gives me problems because I'm one of those doesn't have any idea where the wall is and as a kid my backstoke became even slower than my breastroke because I mainly practice the other three strokes expect when working out on Im and when we did some backstroke sets. Breastroke main injuries are the knee and the groin while the other three strokes cause swimmers shoulder problems. In fact I think all teams should do some breastroke to help avoid the swimmer shoulder problems with freestyle or backstroke or butterfly. I even workout on backstroke which is my worst stroke in order to use different muscle groups.
Breaststroke is my stroke, but last year I tore the cartilage in my knee and couldn't swim breaststroke for about 4 months. What I did to keep me in shape for breaststroke was to do breaststroke with a dolphine kick. This works on your arms and is a good drill for body move ment. Another thing I did was a breaststroke with a pull-boy, this is a little awkward but it works.
Good Luck!!
Swimgirl, not swimming breaststroke for 4 months would be hell for me. I have a groin pull that I've been ignoring the last couple of months and it's getting worse. Now, I'll need to rest and probably not swim full breaststroke for a couple of months - ouch. Oh well, dolphin kick time :-)
my main stroke used to be breaststroke,but my knees both got bad not by bad technique but by sheer usage i now mainly do free as i've been practising this for last 3-4 months,i occasionaly do a few breaststroke but limit this before injury occurs,:o
Hello, As someone stated earlier breaststroke is a very technical stroke so make sure you've got the proper mechanics down before going all out. It is also very important to stretch out good before and after your swim, also start your breaststroke workout with a good 200yd extremely slow and relaxed stroke consentrating on technique and stretch. Hope this helps, Tim
